The Discussion is:

In light of current events (the recent Wienie Roast), how can we as Active Members market this site and provide a safe place to encourage the mutual exchange of facts, ideas, opinions and individual philosophies without infringing on anyone’s right to freedom of speech?

The current method for handling disputes is that you private message one or more of the moderators and let them know of rude/angry/insulting posts....and let them handle it.

I think that its important that we private message each other as well when something hits wrong...in typed messages you cannot feel the inflection/emphasis like you can in the spoken word. If the person answers with more sarcasm....forward both your message and the reply to Kelly. That should close down some of the verbal wrestling faster...maybe.

Its fine to have a difference of opinion...after all there IS more than one right way to do MANY things. Personal attacks/name calling etc is just not allowed.
 
I've been telling "kindred spirits" who love Shelties about Sheltie Nation. I think that's a great way to bring in kind and open-hearted members! :smile2:

I agree, Janet -- snarkiness has no place here. I recall a long while back there was a "tempest in a teapot." We all worked hard to smooth feelings and bring the group together again. I think if you're passionate about Shelties, it's bound to happen once in a while. The important thing is, assume the best intentions, follow Janet's wise advice, and no flaming. :lol:
 
Well, I tell everyone I know that has a sheltie about this forum. I just love it so much. I think they may lurk but I have not seen any of them actually join in :no:. I try.

As far as the 'freedom of speech' goes and differing opinions, I read the posts and if I don't agree with what they say, I sometimes will answer or most of the time, I just ignore it and move on. Over the last year, it has been great here and most people are very open minded. I think there have only been two that I thought were really 'rude' or inappropriate. I know that my views differ than most on certain topics, so I just don't say anything - why upset people is my thought.
 
Yes, it is very important that in the virtual world, where there are no facial expressions and intonations to soften a remark.

We need to "assume" only the best of each other.

Remember to always answer yes to these three questions before speaking:

Is it True?

Is it Kind?

Is it Neccessary?

I would hate for you not to give your opinion if you don't agree with something just to avoid disagreement.

There IS a difference between disagreement and flaming.

You've got lots of valuable insight which we can learn from. I would hate for you to hold back from a thread if it simply provides a different view.

It's all in remembering the RESPECT word. And knowing when to say enough.

In my time on this forum, I think maybe it's happened 2 or 3 times. That's a pretty good track record!
