1st grooming-trimmed the belly area??

Took my sheltie to the groomers for the first time (8 mos old) and they did a wonderful job but shaved around his ***** and trimmed his belly a little. I wasn't expecting this since I had asked not to have his belly hairs trimmed. They were not that long to begin with and now his ***** area is irritated from the shaving. They said it was to keep that hairs in that area clean.
Next time I am going to tell them not to shave or trim anything there.
I am correct in this right?
 
I've heard of groomers cleaning up the private area a little bit with just a tiny trim, but even that I think is unnecessary. However, I've also read that some dogs don't keep themselves clean as they should, so it's something you may consider if that's the case with your dog.

I would never trim the belly at all, though.
 
Thank you. I didn't think that anything there was trimmed and I know it bothers him but just wanted to check.
 
I have considered having Merlin's belly shaved as he has very fine fur that can develop dreadful mats overnight, also he has a tuft on his widdle that goes yellow with urine:dead: Talking to my friend who has a long-haired dog very similar to Merlin the other week we discussed shaved bellies (her dog has his entire belly area shaved) and I didn't think it a bad idea for a dog prone to knots in that delicate area, also with the types of places we go things getting stuck in the belly hair can be another issue.

That being said by keeping an eye on the belly hair I have had no further problems, and if a knot or something nasty gets stuck there I snip it out as I know no one would see it, but I have no intentions to shave him. I wouldn't shave the whole belly either, just between the back legs where the hair is sporadic anyway.
 
We have Buffy's tummy shaved for the summer, and the groomer always cleans up her under-the-tail area. There are some great poop chute threads on the forum about this. If there is irritation developing then I would bet the groomer did something wrong with the shaver. Personally, I would look into getting another groomer, or give very specific instructions and pictures. Groomers that understand Shelties are few and far between. The reason we stick with ours is because Buffy actually likes going there.... but that wasn't the case with my other dog Abigail and her groomer. I always ask our groomer to use gentle, unscented shampoo with Buffy.
 
I used to have Timber's belly shaved a little in the summer but not the long hair on the sides. I think that's ok for non-show dogs. That being said ibe been plagued lately by overly aggressive broilers so I feel like I don't them trimming anything anymore.

I think the key is to be really explicit. I think the next time they go I will give written instructions.

(maybe soon I will have my own pet shop and I'll teach the broilers how to doy dogs!)

What's a "broiler"?

I never heard that expression.

Ahh..double snort!!!

i find this as well with my phone as well.you would not believe how many times I have sent emails,or post on FB,with ridiculous words,that don't belong there.

You can disable it on your phone. I just got a new phone the other day,its Sprints new Photon. Definately a keeper. And it has a great feature of "swipeing". you just swipe your finger over the letters on the key pad,and it automatically figures out the word. Instead of tapping.
