My spayed 8 month old puppy has starting losing control of her bladder whe sleeping or when she is about to doze off. She does this inside and outside, in her crate, on the couch, on the back steps. It is every time she sleeps. Could this be hormonal incontinence? We are going to the vet today. Does anyone have experience with this with their young dog? Thanks.

Could be hormonal, but I also immediately think diabetes insipidus. How much does she drink?

also, it could be a urinary tract infection....there are a lot of things.....

let us know what the vet says xxx

Update on my 8 month old

Scout tested negative for uti. She is drinking the regular amount and acting normal. She wets herself only when sleeping or dozing off. I got a second opinion but no one is sure what is going on. She is scheduled for an ultrasound and clean catch urine sample on Thursday. I'm devastated. The poor thing is wet 5 plus times a day. I'm working hard to keep her dry and clean until we have answers. Her vet has us trying proin but we haven't noticed any significant changes. Thanks for your support.

one of my parents cocker spaniels has diabetes insipidus....the symptoms you are saying are very similar....are they going to check her for that?

My Chloe did this. She was under a year old, and we weren't sure the cause but thought it was maybe a side effect of Lyme.

In any event, my vet put her on a medicine, Proin, for about 6 months. Proin helped her muscles develop to help her hold it in. We weaned her off the medicine and she has not had any problems for a couple of years. During this time she was also getting frequent urine infections.

I should also state that the Proin took a good 4-6 weeks to start working. I would not give up on it, if he prescribed it. Give it a chance to build up in her system.

What is the Proin dosage?

Also, we got an RX from the vet for it and ordered from 1-800 Pet Meds. 3 times cheaper than buying it from the vet.

Scout's update

Scout is on 25mg of proin. Tomorrow is her ultrasound and urinalysis plus blood work. We are starting to see inconsistent improvements; less voiding but no consistent pattern. Still having trouble while sleeping. I will ask about the diabetes. Thanks for the advice on the proin. Scout is such a love. Wish us luck tomorrow.

This exact same thing happened to Hollie but she was about 5. It was hormonal and the Proin helped her. We did eventually wean her to half pill every other day.

Update

Scout had a normal ultrasound. Her blood work and urinalysis are still out for testing but initial tests do not indicate diabetes or uti. She is still on proin but she is not getting full relief from incontinence. She leaks about 3-5 times a day still. We are going to switch to DES next week if there is no change after the rest of the lab results come in. This is very stressful.
