A day in the life of a sheltie

Hello, Grace here.

My mum is always worrying that I get enough to eat, that I get enough rest, that I get enough exercise. So enough, mum! Here is my sort of day all laid out. Perhaps you brothers and sisters out there, will post what your regular day is like also, so that mum can rest happy that she is doing okay and also to satisfy my curiosity. I don't want you get more treats than me for a start!

7:00am - Mum comes down and gets me up. She asks me to go out in the garden but I look at her as if she's nuts. I want kisses and food before I wee.

7:15am - I get fed. But after the cat. He always gets his first, that is so not fair. And his food is gated off so I can't get at it. Even more not fair. But I love my breakfast and I love my mum.

7:20am - I want a wee, and I want it now! Mum you are so slow.

7:30am - Time to wake the rest of the house. I am up, and so should you all be up too. And kisses are the best way to start the day.

8:10am - After dancing around for a bit, and roping anyone in that I can to my games, it's time to go back in my crate. I go in reluctantly.

8:15am - Everyone leaves me alone in the house. Dad says he's going to work, and the two small humans are going to school with mum. I watch the cat from behind the bars.

8:45am - Mum is home. Whoopee. More kisses and I have a chew on something whilst mum has a quick coffee.

9:00am - Walkies. My favourite time of day. We go to the duck pond, or the fields, or sometimes if it's muddy just round the houses. I have many friends, I'm so pretty how can they not love me.

9:30am - Hometime and I will flop whilst mum does housey stuff. I like being with her so I will flop in whichever room she is in. I have to make my hurumping sound as I settle down to rest.

11:00am - Back in my crate as mum has to go to work. :(

2:00pm - Mum is home. Outside for toilet break. Then lots of fun either playing fetch in the house, or tearing round the garden. Sometimes my agillity jumps are set up. Sometimes we play fetch with my squeaky ball.

3:15pm - Dad and the little humans return home. Loads of kisses and cuddles and games and tummy rubs. Luvley.

4:00pm - Dad takes me for a walk. We go in the opposite direction to mum. We go near a building called 'the pub' and dad moans because it's not open. I used to go to the park but it's waterlogged at the moment.

5:00pm - Training. I do some sit, stand, come commands. Sometimes I have to find treats...I don't mind. Sometimes the little humans hide and I have great fun finding them. Sometimes I chase the cat. ssshhh...he likes it, I'm sure.

6:00pm - dinnertime! Food! Yum! And if I'm really good I get gravy on my dinner from mums cooking.

7:00pm - I want to play more, but I'm sent outside first. After a quick wee, I sort through my toy basket and pull out every toy and ask the humans to play with me. I think they get fed up, but I am quite persistant.

8:00pm - Brush time. I stand whilst the young 'uns brush me. Then mum finishes off and I get a treat. My Kong! Yay! This means I have to settle down now.

8:30pm - I have finished my kong. I want to play more but everyone ignores me. I don't have a choice now and settle down to snooze. I settle next to someone on the sofa and get lots of strokes but I get too hot and end up somewhere on my own where it's cooler.

11:00pm - Outside for a quick wee and then it's bedtime. I'm happy to go in now, I exhausted after such a great day.

So this is me. What is your day like?

Love
Grace, 6 months, 3 weeks and 2 days. :)

Hey Gracies

Beau here: I've been with my momma dog for three years next week.

5:30 am. Momma dog wakes up, some times momma dog comes out and carries me from the couch to her bed, she puts me under the covers with her and we cuddle. This morning, though I pulled a fast one on momma dog, I came and jumped up in bed and gave her a morning kiss all on my own. I knew she was awake, I can tell when she's awake from the sound of her breathing.

6:30 am Momma dog takes her shower, I wait outside the door for her to get done, I know when the blow dryer goes off its time for my morning walk

7:00am-830am Momma takes me to the park to potty and then we go for a long walk, I meet new people and I like to go up and say good morning to them. Momma says its okay as long as the other people want me to give them some love. I made a new girl friend last week, she has cerebral palsy and she loves it when I run up to her and let her rub my belly. We generally walk for about 15 blocks and then come back, we help the crossing guard "Miss Carol" with her duties crossing the kids to schools, some of the kids like me, some are afraid of me, momma makes sure that I don't get to close to the ones she knows are afraid of me, she tells me its not right for me to go up to people even though I'm friendly, because they might get upset.

8:30am Momma dog makes my breakfast I get a 1/4c dry mix with some wet food.

930am Momma dog eats her breakfast, sometimes when I'm really good , Momma gives me some of her bacon. Yummy, to my tummy,

10:30 am Momma dog takes me out for another long, long walk, we go about another 20 + block and we come back and settle down for a bit, I like to snuggle with my momma. I curl up half moon shape and I let momma hold me like a human baby. she likes to kiss my nose. Sometimes, momma dog sings to me. I don't like that much, momma can't sing and I have sensitive ears, I'm a sheltie afterall, momma should know better, but, she can't help herself

12:30pm Momma feeds me lunch then she watches her favorite soap opera Y&R @1:30pm Momma takes me out for our last walk of the day, generally the same distance as the one we take mid morning. Along the way Momma lets me say hi to people who want to pet me, some people even like to give me treats just because they say I make them happy. Imagine that getting treats because your cute.

In the afternoon, Momma and I spend time cuddling and I supervise my Momma doing housework stuff, I like to supervise my momma in the kitchen, momma tends to drop on lot of things. Its my job to clean those things that she drops up.

7pm I start to settle down for the night, I am peed/pooped out. I know my momma loves me because my momma not only tells me this every day, my momma shows me this by what she does for me.

Hi Beau your momma sounds cool, but you sure get up early. I am jealous that you are allowed on your momma's bed. I'm not allowed on my mum's. I think it was because I wet on it a few weeks ago. Oopsie!:uhoh:

Sounds like you have a wonderful schedule! My dogs aren't quite as lucky as my husband and I both work all day long.

6:15 am alarm goes off and the dogs are up immediately.
6:20 am dogs get fed
6:30 am dogs go outside for a 10 minute walk
6:45 am we sit on the couch together cuddling while I drink my coffee
7:45 am dogs are put in the living room with a peanut butter stuffed Kong
5:00 pm husband gets home and the dogs get fed
5:15 pm dogs go on a 15 minute walk
...sometime in between here we play, do their exercises, sometimes do agility or go to agility class or take another long walk (20-30 minutes)...
10:30 pm bedtime!

Wow you guys are very lucky dogs! Here is Shelby's schedule:

5am:
alarrm goes off and Shelby reluctantly wakes up stretching and yawing. Helps mom make the bed while daddy is brushing his teeth. Snuggles with mommy for a few minutes. Daddy goes downstairs to make coffee (Shelby is too tired to follow) so she stays upstairs while everyone showers and gets ready for work.

530am: go downstairs with daddy (mommy takes too long in the shower). Must eat breakfast firstthen outside to pee, poo, and snack on some rabit poo.

540: finially mommy is downstairs too. I am back in by now so mommy gets Shelby hugs and Shelby gets an ice cube.

Mommy and Daddy have coffee and bananas. Shelby always gets a piece of banana. Then I sit on Daddys lap and fall back asleep.

6am: As soon as the clock chimes I run to my house and wait for mommy and daddy to say good bye see you after work. We love you!

4pm: mommy and daddy are home and let me out of my house. We spend the evening playing inside and out, eating supper, going for a nice long walk. Some times mommy takes me to the nursing home to visit the old people there. They love me!!! By 8 I begin to settle down and find a nice cold place to lay down.

10 pm: last call for going out to pee then upstairs to bed. I am not allowed in bed so I have my own bedon the floor. But sometimes daddy is snoring real loud so me and mommy go to another bedroom and mommy lets me sleep in bed with her (shh don't tell daddy)

Right now DH works from home and I'm still home most of the time since I haven't started interning so Olive is pretty spoiled having us both around all the time

~7-830a Olive wakes us up by moving around in her bed
DH takes her out, then feeds her before going to go play on the computers (aka "work")
8a I get up and Olive follows me around as I get ready
940a Olive gets her #2 time (she's scheduled her own "business")
945a Olive pouts as I head out the door but goes to lay around the office
12 DH takes Olive out for a short walk
2p Olive spins and whines when I get home and then plops on the couch while I work on papers
3-340p Olive and I go to the dog park
4p Olive pouts as I head out again
6p Olive gets dinner and goes potty
800-1000p Olive gets her energy spurts and runs around like a crazy pup, especially if I have an evening class since I get home around 9
11-12p night potty and bed time

Me too! Me too!

I got such a kick reading Grace's routine story that I had to write my own. Hope you enjoy

Somewhere’s around 5am – Is that a rooster I hear down the block?? Sometimes mummy will get restless during this time of night but I wait patiently till she wakens

6:30 radio alarm goes off– Is she up yet? Noooo…I move in closer so I can be RIGHT-THERE when she opens her eyes. I know she’s almost awake cuz she just hit that loud box thingy again but with her eyes closed.

7am – Almost there… I inch closer and let out little whimpers and sighs. Does she see me yet? Cum ‘on mummy...I want my kibbles!!

7:15am – SHE’S AWAKE! SHE’S AWAKE! Hallelujah! Kibbles, wee time, belly rubs for me! Yay, it’s all about me!

7:17am – Barrel downstairs barely touching the last two steps or so and dash to the kitchen where my oh so beloved kibbles await! Oh my gosh! I can hardly stand it! Yipe! Yipe! And twirl, twirl, swinging my tail in happy anticipation!

7:18am – Okay, and DONE! Whew, breathe! Now outside to wake up the squirrels, birds, chipmunks, neighbors and whoever else can hear me in a two block radius! Wuf, Wuf, I’m so happy to be me, aren’t I pretty world?! Look at me!

7:30am – I’ve done my business and made a nice little deposit. Mummy already went upstairs to get ready for the day but I’m safe out here. I have a doggy door to come and go as I please, a deck off the ground to peruse the neighborhood and a fenced in backyard that is all my own. Lucky me, lucky me, lucky me…doot to doot to doo…bark here and a bark there…sniff, sniff

8:45am – time to see mummy off to work. I really dislike this part of the day very very much. I protest by not letting her pet me and I throw a tantrum with barking and twirling. Then when she closes the door I bang my paws on the door after her in a cry of protest! Darn it! I miss my mummy already….super sad face

8:45 – 4pm – sleep, sleep, and more sleep. Borriinnnnggggg……

4pm – AH, finally! Its my neighbor girl!! She’s so nice to me and luvs to give me hugs n smooches. And she’s the best darn doggy walker out there. She takes me to lots of cool places where I can roam around without my leash. FreeDOMMMMmmm! Yay, I’m a happy dog again.

5pm – And I’m pooped. Now just a little while longer till my ultimate mummy gets home and its kibble time. (see previous stated routine above ;)

7pm – Mummy is finally home and relaxing and now its me time. I paw the floor like making a bed in the grass and lay down with meh belly in the air. I’ll just lay here and wait. She’ll see me. She can’t resist me when I do this. I really am such an adorable pretty princess….

9:30pm – time for bed (for mummy at least). Bark at the TV going off, bark at the lights going off, there really isn’t anything I won’t get excited about really. Whilst mummy is in the bathroom, I grab my ‘upstairs babie’ and bring it to her for a game of fetch. We continue this into the bedroom (cuz its all about me, remember?!) And I KNOW mum needs this to let out the last bit of energy before going to bed.

9:45pm – Mmmm, mummy brushed her teeth. I LUUVV the minty smell. I climb up in her arms and give her air kisses cuz I like it so much. I go OCD on the tongue smacking thing. Mummy says I got a broken tongue. She might be right cuz I can’t stop this thing! Mummy gets tired of it and its time for zzz’s…..and to sleep in the “nook”. I really am a good cuddler.

8:00 - Make sure my people get enough playtime.

10:00 - Outside so I can be good all night. Get girl to put me on the tall sleeping place.

10:30 - Keep cat from running after car lights. Get girl to take me off the tall sleeping place. Wake if necessary.

...Ah, the floor, so sleepy.

5:30 The alarm goes off and I start pacing circles around the bedroom. Mom is always slow to turn off the alarm and get up.
5:45 Breakfast. When I hear the rattle of the stainless pans, I start spinning and singing.
5:50 I follow Mom into the bathroom and watch while she takes a shower and puts on her makeup.
6:30 First Foxfire goes out. I wait my turn. I'm second to go out. Mom says there may be coyotes outside and Foxy has to clear the area so the coyotes don't eat me. I come in and Tempest goes out.
4:10 Mom is home and we all go out and chase each other. The big dogs knock me around like a little ball but I get right up and run some more. Sometimes we go for a long walk down the farm roads but lately, Mom is too cold so we don't stay out long.
5:00 I hear the pans bang so it's time for dinner. I'm so excited I can't help but whirl and sing.
6:00 Mom eats so I play with Foxy and warn Tempest not to come near her. I always get scolded for growling at Tempest. I know if Mom would let me, I could whip that big, ugly brute into shape. Foxy is my girlfriend and Temp needs to find his own.
7:00 Foxy and Tempest are rough housing in the kitchen so I get out of the way so I don't get smashed. I know Mom will make them stop in a few minutes.
7:30 Time to go outside and run around like mad for a while then back in and Mom watches TV.
10:30 Back outside for the last time. Foxy goes out first again to scare away the coyotes. I'm not afraid of coyotes but Mom says they will eat me because I'm little. Foxy is very brave and big (she weighs three times as much as I do). Temp goes out last and we all settle down to sleep.

Note: One of the other two dogs is pulling pieces out of the throw rug in the bedroom. I know who it is but I'm not telling Mom. I also saw the cat tear a Kleenex into shreds. I didn't tell on him either. I'm a sheltie and shelties are never bad.
