Acana Prairie Harvest

I was wondering if anyone else was having soft poop with the Acana Prairie Harvest? Darcy was on the Acana Pacifica and everything was ok than I decided to rotate to give a little verity and now his poop is soft on the Prairie Harvest. Prairie Harvest's protein and fat is 1% higher than the Pacifica. Do you think I need to maybe cut back portions?

My guys are both now on Orijen which is made by the same company - and is even higher in protein than Acana. We began the transition about 1 month ago. Neither one of them is having loose stool issues.

I suspect that even switching from one "flavour" to another, even from the same manufacturer, can result in tummy upset as they get used to the new ingredients. That may be the cause of the loose stools.

I think if you are going to switch back and forth for variety, then you have to transition, just like you would if you were switching to a new brand.

That being said, I've never seen the need to provide variety. I think this is a purely human concept that we assume our dogs will become bored with their food, because we would if we ate the same thing every day.

My tuppence worth!

I feed Acana Grasslands which is part of their grain free line and haven't had a problem with loose stools at all. On the contrary, Ripley actually has firmer stools on this food than with any other (we've tried Solid Gold, Innova, and Merrick's Granny's Pot Pie, and California Natural). He generally does better on Lamb based foods like the grasslands formula and the California Natural, except california natural left him constipated most days. Poor little bugger.

It probably really all just depends on the dog and what agrees with their tummy the best. There were many foods that I loved because of the great ingredients that just didn't work out for Ripley. If Acana doesn't work for your pup I'm sure something out there will!

I'm in transition to Orijen. So far, all is well. Of course, with my brood, I could probably switch to nails, and they'd be ok!

It's actually based on the theory that different proteins provide different nutrients and therefore is a healthier option. I feed Orijen so haven't switched protiens because they don't come in any. I am thinking of trying Arcana if it becomes available up here.

Switching from one formula within a brand to another is just like switching over to a completely new food. You've got to slowly transition to it.

So we are another month into the Acana and his stool is still soft but it has form. Usually it's super soft at the end. He did great on the puppy Wellness and puppy Orijens. Not sure what to do...

I'm with you!

I'm going to be doing research again tonight on foods.

I had completed the switch to Orijen just when Bacca got sick. In an effort to get him to eat again, I ended up back with Pro Plan. Now I want to get him back off the Pro Plan.

As much as I like the Orijen, its a nuisance to buy as I have to go out of my way to get it. I like the Acana as well, but its even harder to get.

I want grain-free. I'm thinking about Canadaie or Innova.....

With the higher protein content, I would think that they would need less food.
I read on one of my packages of dog kibble that if they have loose stools, they are eating too much. Try cutting back, just a little bit and see if that helps. Good Luck!
