Advise on training and a name please!

Hi all!

As most of you know(first thread) I just got my 9 month old "sheltie"(sheltie mix lol) yesterday. Bought him from a lady that claimed he was a purebred sheltie. His coat is way too short for a 9 month old as many of y'all have told me. She told me that his dad's coat was the same way and it took him 2 years to get his coat. Anyways I love my "mixed" baby. Lol He is so goofy, very sweet, and EXTREMELY energetic! He's very hyper and I really want to start training and working with him, but I think I need to let him get more adjusted to his new home and well.. Me. How do I go about training?? I'm new to all of this. He's my first dog. One that is actually mine and not a family dog. Lol I have a Lhasa Apso and a Pomeranian at my parents house(I'm only 20 btw. Hah)

Also here are some names I like for him. Which do y'all like? I hate not having a name for him yet. :( Cosmo, Vrka, Xander, Archer, Apollo, Lobo, Jax, Ace, Zed, Ze'ev, Lykos, and Otto.

I am going to officially vote for Archer -- why? Are you aware he has the marking of an arrow? Look at the side pix you posted and it is really clear. Yes, Archer.
 
As to training -- first give his shots time to become full-force protection.

Second -- find a good dog school -- not Petsmart but a really school with a trainer that you are comfortable with.

I have never had dogs in school -- they sat. We were happy. These two that I have both have now have been through school. The shepherd went through basic and then I stopped because he can't work close to other dogs and is just too high strung to go on. Maybe when he is older and wiser. Melli, delightful to work with. She has learned so much task-wise and the mental stimulation is fabulous. They teach you right, they move you along appropriately, and you can expand out to agility, scent, etc. if you like. It's great socialization, bonding, team-building, mommy-n-me special time, exercise, mental stimulation, work for the working dog, etc. It is way more than sit, down, stay, come.

I agree--out of the names listed Archer is the best! And that arrow is pretty big LOL
 
I like Archer, too. For training, I recommend the book The Art of Training a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete. You can find it on Amazon. I swear by it -- we raised all four of our by the Monks, and everyone remarks on how calm and well behaved they are.
 
Another vote for Archer. I don't know any dogs with that name either.

Formal training classes are a good idea. They are a great way to establish a common language between you and your pup, and Shelties just love to learn.
 
Showed my husband the pic of the dog with the arrow on him -- husband loved the name Archer too. Another vote! Husband adored the dog too!

I second this! I brought Emmy up with their methods and she has grown into a very well mannered young lady (minus the car lunging...but we're working on that).

He's so cute!!!! And I like the name Archer!
