Agility Question

I thought i read somewhere here that starting our pups under 1 Year in agility was not recommended.
We have the basic,sit ,down and working on stay commands :o
I would like to start building some basic jumps and a A-frame maybe.
I figure she is running in and out of my trees like a banshee anyway so why not give her some direction.

What do you all think ?

I usually do some kind of jump training as babies, with the bars set to 4 inches. Just enough they have to think about it. Stay away from weave poles, especially in bigger dogs until after a year. You can do all the tunnels and contact trainers and tippy boards you want. I have one of those play cubes in the yard, with the downside of a dog walk coming out of it. So the high end is only 18 inches off the ground. They play on that and learn to be off the ground. It's also fun to watch them go down the slide on the other side.
 
That sounds like what I want to do with Emma. I don't intend to do agility with her but I do want to keep her busy. She is a puppy that needs to be busy. Jumps like you describe are what I am after. Thanx for the tips. The pet stores here have jumps that we can buy but I'll stick with what you have suggested for now. Emma does like to climb up on the foot stools, which are about a foot high.

I did purchase a small hula hoop (not sure if that is what they are still called or not) at the dollar store to try to get her to do some low height jumping (to simulate through the tire, but she would rather herd it - picture hoop rolling, dog chasing.

Sounds like our puppies are busy little creatures that need direction and a job to do but they bring such joy into our lives, what would we ever do without them.
 
NOT that I can give much recommendations.. since I am novice myself!
But you can work a lot of stuff before, like sit/stay of course etc. Target training is key, and touch so that he learns to follow your hand... Some things you can start with!

I think the key is to not make your pup do too much jumping before they turn one. Also, Clantyre is right, no weaving for now.

Your assuming the handler can tell their left from their right when running. Somehow that circuit doesn't connect in my brain. You can't imagine the flack I've gotten because of that.:lol: I blame it on being left handed.:wink2:

Me too!! My left is my "right"! I have more luck with 'gee' and 'haw.' Wonder if that cause a stir during class...

I have the same problem, but I blame it on the fact that I write with my left hand, use a knife, throw and bat with my right, and do everything else with either hand.
