allergic to shots

Glad Ember is okay !

Starr , You are a great mommy. They will worry you sick sometimes just like our human Children. I would X out that bortadella as well. I don't get that shot for any of my furkids unless I need to bring them in for boarding or a grooming That I decide not to do.:winkgrin: Sheltie hugs to you and Ember and God Bless.:yes:
 
Mine only get the c5 (kennel cough) shots because I do kennel them, otherwise my vet considers the C4 to be enough.

Mine get 12mthly heartworm shots as well. Most of the dogs around me don't get heartworm because it is not common where I live. But it is common in Melbourne where my mum lives so its easier for me to get the annual shots than to remember to do the pills. My previous sheltie got monthly heartworm and it was such a nuisance.
 
It's funny you should ask this now. I just had Meggie to the vet for rabies and distemper shots. She suggested a lepto shot for Meggie and foolish me said fine. They take the dogs to another area for vaccinations. I opened Meggie vaccination records and across the side in big black letters was a handwritten note from her breeder: Caution do not give lepto or corona! I tried to get the vet before the shot was administered but it was too late. She explained that Meggie might react with swollen face, etc., but that she didn't know of a particular problem with Shelties and suggested that perhaps it was a problem within Meggie's line. I called Meggie's breeder and she said she had a champion show dog that almost died from a lepto shot. That dog is Meggie's grandfather. Luckily Meggie had no adverse reaction. But she said under no circumstances should I get the second shot. So, I'd be leary to go back for another shot with what you experienced with Ember.

Has anyone given their dogs the lyme vaccine? My breeder also vetoed that idea!

I am finding so much helpful info on this forum. You are all great. I just took Pandora in a few hours ago to get her shots. She comes out of the hallway and her face was all swollen. I rushed her to the vet and she started crying and screaming on the way. He gave her an anti-inflammitory and a benedryl and told me to call him at home in an hour if she wasn't better. Thank goodness, so far so good. Her swelling has gone down quite a bit and she isn't crying anymore. She is getting the shakes once in awhile, but I think she will be ok.
 
Shelties do seem to be more prone to vaccine reactions in my experience. I have not found reactions to lepto to be any more common than reactions to any other vaccine. I used to work for a clinic that pushed vaccines all of them:((one of the reasons I'm no longer there). I kept track and the lowest reactor Intranasal Bordetella-mostly just snuffles if anything. The highest lyme. I live in a very high lyme area so it is a big risk here. Most unvaccinated dogs get it.

My dog Jazz and Ember both had reactions to lyme. Jazz was hives. Ember's was anaphlaxis. For Ember, it was the yearly booster after then first 2 shot series. Needless to say I do not vaccinate Ember for lyme the risk to benefit ratio is too high. I do not vacinate my dogs for corona, lepto, or giardia or use the dental vaccine. Only 3 year rabies and 3 year distemper/parvo and bordetella as I go to shows. There are risks with vaccinating and not vaccinating and I encourage people to talk with their vets reguarding their pups vaccine schedule based on their life style and risks.

BTW I found out later, that Ember's sire had a reaction to rabies.

Wow Dr. Shelli you bring up an excellent point about our pups family history behind reactions to vaccinations. I think I will email the breeder to find out if any of Megan's relatives had reactions!

Megan took her puppy shots like nothing ever happened, here's hoping it stays that way:wink2:
 
My breeder recommended that we do not get the Lepto vaccine for our Shelties, as there has been reactions to it in her lines.
