Allergies????

I have two shelties, Mick and DJ, littermates, just a year old.
They both got a skin reaction on their backs, down by the hips, a few days after their first professional grooming.
Vet says it is not due to the grooming. He thinks it is environmental.
Nothing else changed in their environment.
Thoughts? Experiences?
 
Could it be the soap the groomer used? or they got some snacks they have not had before? saltwater? I have not had this problem myself, but has experienced on some dogs i know that has reacted on plants or flowers in the garden.. Hope you figure it out soon!
 
I usually groom my shelties myself but a friend of mine took my Buddy to the groomer for a birthday present . He was real itchy afterwards. I think it was the soap. Thats the only change he had. Maybe if you use a groomer try using the soap you used on then at home! My female sheltie can use anything on her coat without any after effects.
 
Spike, my old Bichon used to come home from the groomers with his skin bright red--you could see it through his coat. I bought some Sargent's Dermatological shampoo at Walmart and he was fine as long as I used that shampoo. No more turning red and scratching and chewing all over. Maybe that will work for you. Allergies are a bear to try and figure out what causes them. Could be the type of food you use too. What kind of dog food do they eat?
 
Did the vet give you anything for it? I live in a high allergy area (dry climate). Tully gets grass allergies and many of the longer haired dogs we know have allergies. Tully gets shots for the allergy season, otherwise I give her a small dose of human antihistamine. You would know pretty quickly if it was an allergy if the antihistamine worked. I didn't believe Tullys licking was allergy related until she had a shot and suddently the licking stopped.

When I bring my boys to the groomer for a bath, I personally have to deal with allergic reactions to whatever they put on the dogs for days afterwards. I don't know if its because of the product they use or because the fur tends to fly after a bath. However, it would not surprise me if your pups were allergic as well. The shampoo that groomers tend to use is full of perfumes so they smell sweet when you come pick them up.

I've actually thought about bringing my own shampoo to the groomer and asking them to use that instead.

The dry shampoo and conditioner that I use has no scent at all.
 
What hit me with this. The groomers shampoo the shelties, their hair is thick, they start at the top and work the shampoo down. When they rinse its the same thing, they start from the top and go down. They are not rinsing enough in those down areas to get the shampoo out. The shampoo is working its way down as they rinse from the top

I know this sounds like a pain, I would put them in a tub and rinse that area really well, to see what happens. If the situation improves you know that groomer rushed that area in the rinse.

I use an oatmeal shampoo, but it doesn't matter what they use, get the shampoo out groomer. I spend more time rinsing then I do shampooing. I am aggravated for you.
 
I've taken my own shampoo to the groomers. They usually use generic shampoos for all dog types at groomers here and just dont have the less harsh products needed by the long double coats.
 
Yes, the vet gave them Simplicef and Temaril-P. The reaction started 9 or 10 days after they were groomed. Is it possible for a reaction to the groomer to take that long?
