We had our 5 year old dog's anal glands expressed recently by our vets office but Once in awhile I notice a bad odor and discolored spot on the sheet she sometimes sits on. has anyone else had this happen with their dog?
I have not had this happen with Cleo but my cat Kiba has that problem from time to time. It was so bad that if he leaked and then sat on the blankets and got the "ick" on the sheets, they had to be washed immediately. The vet said she could do surgery to remove the gland, however I opted to not put him through that and just deal with it. I was told then that if it started to leak, just use and alcohol wipe and wipe the area clean and that should take care of it. Certain things use to set it off with him too. Like getting overly excited when pet. It was so cute when he got excited, then so annoying because of the anal thing. But sometime in the last year it seems to have lessened and now it happens on a rare occasion. However, when it does, he is really good picking up on the smell and then taking care of the problem himself. I know with a sheltie that would be kind of hard.
You could just check with your vet and see what they suggest to help deal with the issue. Good luck!
Hollie used to have that same issue. We also didn't do surgery. We just had the vet express them every so often. I know you can do it yourself but honestly you could not pay me enough money to do it.
One time I really felt bad for the new vet at the practice when we took Shelby to have this done. He walked I with his nice clean white lab coat on and didn't take it off to express her. Let's just say he wasn't wearing that lab coat the rest of the day.
