My DH and I have decided it's time to add another Sheltie pup to the family! Our Kennedy just turned 1 year old, and has outgrown the initial 'puppy' stage....but with plenty of puppy energy to spare. Darcy (our 14 year old rescue) doesn't always appreciate this, as you might imagine :razz: Her idea of heaven is a day spent on the couch!

So we're looking to balance out the clan! No real questions in this thread...just had to share my excitement!!!

We've contacted the assa breeder referral people for our area, and are just waiting to hear back about breeders with anticipated availability for our preferred timeframe (before Nov./Oct.)

Good for you! How exciting! I wish I was in your position. I would love to add another one. Let us know how it goes!
 
How exciting! I'm jealous! I've been working on my husband to bring home a 3rd! Still waiting for approval, though :lol:

Are you looking to bring home a puppy for Kennedy to play with? Or an older dog? Just curious. And are you looking for a specific color or gender?

Can't wait to hear all about it!
 
How exciting ! I'm jealous as well... My two are 10 + years apart. Looking forward to hearing how it goes.
 
We'd like another puppy. Puppies are hard work, but you can make them 'your' dog. With training, you can start them early to not be 'barky' b/c it is sooo difficult to untrain a sheltie's vocal tendency. But we've found (both with Kennedy and Austen) that we were able to develop a very effective 'distraction' technique.

However, this approach doesn't work with Darcy at all! She was just brought up being encouraged to bark at everything (even yelling at sheltie while they are barking is 'encouragement':rolleyes2: which I think is why so many people have difficulty controlling their pups barking, b/c the natural reaction is just to scold the poor dog!)

But that's just a small example of why we're looking for a puppy vs a young adult. We would like a playmate for Kennedy, but we just love him so much and enjoying having him and Darcy, that we want more :biggrin2: I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about.

We have a house, big fenced yard, and the idea of kids are still a few years away. We have the time and resources right now to properly train a puppy, so we just feel the time is right.

I do have a question for everyone though...Male vs. female?

We love that Kennedy is a love and cuddle bug. He will sleep snuggled up to us on the bed or couch. He loves being around us. Austen was the same way. They were/are both male blue merles.

We don't have a large base for comparison for female shelties. Darcy is more independent, but she's also much older and has a lifetime of experience before she came to live with us.

I've heard males tend to be more affectionate, whereas the girls are a little more self sufficient. What do you guys think?

I've always heard that males are more affectionate, but my two dogs don't fit that trend. My boy likes to be near us, but is not affectionate in the typical sense of the word. He sits next to you, but never on you. He doesn't give kisses, or really like being held (though he tolerates it). My girl wants to be on us all the time. She loves to kiss and will sleep on my chest if I let her!

I think the best thing to do is to find a breeder and tell them what you're looking for (affectionate, cuddly, whatever) and let them find the match regardless of sex.
