Another Sheltie or a rough Collie?

If it weren't for the size I'd absolutely go with the rough collie - they are so gentle and just as beautiful as shelties and much less likely to be barkers. We used to walk on the beach with a fellow who owned 2 and they are absolutely lovely and devoted companions.

Kaleigh taught my neighbor's collie how to dig in planters-she never did that before but after one of our visits this summer, she "learned". So shelties can do damage to a collie, ha. Joy and Buddy, the collies, were tremendous at socializing Kaleigh, they were very patient with her zoomie puppy behavior and when she got too intense, Joy would put her paw on Kaleigh's head and Kaleigh would calm down. I think collies are wonderful pets!!!!

I had bigger shelties in the past, and having to carry my last one towards the end of her life got to be too much. So this time I opted to get smaller ones because lifting them as you age is something you gotta be prepared for. But I am not getting as small as I thought, Kaleigh ended up being bigger than mom, and dad. I think Savannah is gonna be bigger than her littermates and parents.
 
We had collies for over 27 years before we got our first sheltie. You can't go wrong with either but I'm now partial to shelties.
 
We've been considering a collie next too. There don't seem to be as many collies available in rescue around these parts so that will factor in when the time comes, which hopefully won't be for at least 3-4 years. Our male Forrest is so big I call him my collie boy.

Flip a coin, you'll be happy with either result :lol:
 
I love my Shelties and always will...I have always wanted a rough Collie and now I have one. Joey is a blue merle, rough coat...he was 8 weeks old yesterday. He is a cute little guy and is doing very well...and he learns quickly.
 
We have had both - a rough collie when our kids were small and now have a Sheltie. We considered another collie before we got our Sheltie. We took size into consideration. Our last dog, an English Setter was hard for me to get into the car when it was time for the vet. I told my husband we needed to downsize this time. I like the Sheltie demeanor too - a little spunkier than our Collie, both intelligent dogs and eager to please. Grooming the Sheltie is easier since he is smaller. If I was able I really would have one of both!
 
I am worried about adding another Sheltie because of the barking. Estella is a good girl and does not bark in the house. If she gets a a barkysheltie companion, we may all go crazy!

I think you just found your answer. It sounds like you want there to be a collie in your future.
