Any way to teach a dog NOT to mind when your cutting his claws?

Sheltt; Can you give me the name and model number of the Dremel you use that is so quiet? I have heard that some of them are very good, and others are very bad.
 
I have the Peticure one and to be honest, I'm not too impressed with it. It stops turning if I press a little harder on it. If I don't press hard, it turns and trims their nails, but it takes forever. My friends have an ordinary dremmel that they bought at a golf store (they apparently use them to clean and shine golf balls with them?!) and they use it and it works fast and does a great job. So I've resorted to clipping their nails first, and then using the dremmel to smooth it off.

I'm having troubles with positioning the dogs to use the dremmel. I am right handed and have best control of my dogs when they are sitting/standing beside me and my left arm is around them. But to use the dremmel, I have to be infront of them to use my right hand. My two will not lay down for me, so it's a bit of a chore right now. Oh well...

I don't know what Sheltt is using, but I use Peticure Pro.

I don't find it noisy at all....no more than an electric shaver, but with anything new, it just takes getting the pups used to it.

It does take longer to do the nails than with a clipper though - assuming the pup can abide having his nails clipped. With the Peticure, it heats up pretty fast while its grinding a nail, so you can really only do a few seconds per nail. Essentially that means going round each paw twice.

Then I hid it behind my back and turned it on to get him used to the noise. Next, I turned it on and held it against his body, gradully working down to his legs.

Finally the nails. The first few times, only 1 second per nail, and not even the whole foot.

Now, he just flops over and lets me go at it. Still working on Indy, but he's coming around too!

I know this is old but the Sca is getting a bit clawed :eek2: So while you were warming him up to it what did you do Barb? Sca doesn't mind the Peticure, he looks when it is turned on and doesn't seem to care.... but don't touch his toes :mad: I tried me holding and petting while mom grinding (dog credits for gadget consultations) and we did not even get half of one nail. I think I can get him to deal with it but it will be a while so what did you do in the meantime :confused2:
 
Mine don't like to be still either. Both of mine aren't particularly bothered by the sound of the Dremmel, they just don't like to be still for any period of time. I sit on the floor then turn them upside down and prop them up between my legs. Sadie submits immediately and just lies there till its done. Ginny, my pup squirmed for the first few minutest but also submits eventually. She gets a little bit better each time. I always do Sadie first so the pup can see Sadie being calm about it. I praise them constantly and pet them while I'm doing it and then get very excited and give them lots of praise when I'm done.

btw, I have a Job Mate brand rotary tool (Dremmel). I've seen it on sale at Canadian Tire for $10.00. It works great, although if you want to spend the money on a cordless one, BarbV swears by her cordless Dremmel Sylus.

This putting the pups in between your legs,on thier backs,is the best way.If you can get them to submit to thier backs. But it is the easier way of doing thier nails,then to be reaching over,and sometimes under to get the nails done.

I was waiting till Trapp was sound asleep,usually later in the evening,when he really is ready to settle for the night,and was much calmer. But now that he is a bit older,we have been doing this with him.Lots of treats,calm voice. Then slowly introduce you choice of cutting tool.
So if you are using a dremal type tool,first put the tool beside the pup,not turned on. And work slowly to the point where you can turn it on low,and let it lay beside them.Then work gradually to touching the nail,in the off & on position.

It just takes a bit of time,and using positive reinforcement,treats.
 
My furkids feel better if they have some sense of control. I have them stand, and I work my way around them, one foot at a time. Sometimes I have to do two of Beckon's one day, and two the next. :rolleyes2:
 
Thanks on his back would work good. He has a bit of I have to be moving in him but he does like his chest rubbed. The evening thing wouldn't work right now as he goes from wide open until he is worn out then paces like he thinks he still should be going. Then when he lays down for a snooze it is not by me and if I go to see him he repeats the cycle rather than lays there for petting :rolleyes2:
 
I use a dremel and have just been giving lots of treats after every time the dremel touches the nail. I put Romeo on a makeshift "grooming stand" which he doesn't dare jump off for some reason. It's still not his favourite thing to do but at least he doesn't mind it too much!

Try getting the dog out of their element and put them in yours! Also keeping a leash on them may help. That shows you have total control.

I got a Chihuahua like that too! I was thinking she is part wolverine...or tazmanian devil...lol never underestimate the power of a Chi...lol...My shelties on the other hand stand like good kids . If I get out the brush and as Buddy if he wants Mother to brush him he will come lay on my lap . He loves that!
