Apoquel

Anyone on this?
It sounds like a very promising medication for far and away our biggest problem, atopic dermatitis. And much less expensive than Atopica.
Problem is availablility.
Even though our local dermatologist can acquire it, we have heard, for us GPs, it is backordered until the middle of next year. :eek2:
Any feedback on those using it, or if your veterinarian has obtained it, welcome.

We just talked about this last night one of our vets heard about it during a CE lecture. Looks promising. We don't have much call for it in a shelter setting but it is something to consider for certain dogs.

Resurrecting an old thread for new information.
Our vet recommended it as maybe a stop gap for Olive so she can get allergy tested since she can't be off Temaril-P for the time required. The clinic was quoted August but may get a better supply earlier.

Oddly enough, our first supply arrived today. We had preordered 6 weeks ago. Anxious to give it a try on some of our most problematic cases.

Here's a weird fact about Apoquel - and perhaps I am misinformed, I have yet to directly speak to the rep about this, maybe others here know more- but all three sizes appear to be the same price. So that treating a 60lb dog is the same price as treating a 20 lb dog. (This is a great improvement over Atopica, which was like $300 a month for a 90 lb dog.)

HOWEVER - the large tablet is even scored so it can be cut in half easily. So how long is it gonna take people to realize that you cut the large tablet in quarters and its 1/4 the price of the small tablet? The experienced practitioner figures this out in about 4 seconds, why didn't this occur to the manufacturer?

Again, perhaps I am missing something here. Can anyone offer a correction?

Don't think you're missing anything. Drug companies know people trust their vets and physicians, and if they don't have dogs of different weights that need the same medication, they would never know the cost is the same.

Manufacturers don't care its all about the $$$. Thank goodness for the vets and
doctors. I could write a book on manufacturers for human meds concerning my
husband's pills and the prices. $5000 a year out of pocket.

If there is a patent on the drugs you have mentioned, it places the med in a
high tier and the price goes up, until the patent expires. So they think everyone
is stupid not to cut the meds for the proper dosage. You figured it out and so
will others. Like I said, its all about the $$$.

follow the GREED

with pharma companies making 95 BILLION in profit in 2015...for the major ones-I don't see that it is about what is best for a pet, a human, or for mankind in general. It is about PROFIT and ONLY PROFIT for the industry. I would NEVER ever trust anything they said, they printed, they tested, much less produced, because it isn't about wellness, it is SOLELY about GREED. Ask any pharma REP who is honest...well that is an oxymoron, ha.
