Arthritis pain control

Hi All,

Boots turned 11 a couple months ago, and he's clearly got arthritis pains.
We've been giving him 2x Costco fish oil for a couple years, however I don't think that is working much at this point. I don't want to simply increase FO as it is a blood thinner.
I know I should just do the regular thing and get him on Cosequin or such, however it really irks me that they seem to automatically double the price for anything pet related.
So, been doing research on human-grade joint supplements and I think I've found a decent one.
Dr's Best Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM, and Hyaluronic Acid.
The only questionable ingredient is Magnesium Stearate, however most recent data seems to indicate it is GRAS, NOW has a good page on it: https://www.nowfoods.com/healthy-living/FAQs/magnesium-stearate-faqs
As does https://www.raysahelian.com/magnesiumstearate.html
The Q&A was interesting.

So, since I don't see an Xylitol or other canine dangerous substances, I am thinking of going ahead with this supplement unless someone here has information that would suggest that is a bad idea.

Ingredients are as follows:

Ingredient (mg Per Pill x2 Pills Dose Total
Chloride 33.4 66.8 66.8
Sodium 19 38 38
Potassium 34 68 68

Glucosamine Sulfate 300 600 600
Chondroitan Sulfate 200 400 480
MSM 200 400 400

Biocell Collogen 200 400 400
Hydrolyzed Collogen Type II 120 240 240
Chondroitan Sulfate 40 80
Hyaluronic Acid 20 40 40

Recent study found Type II Collogen seemed to work better than Glucosamine and Chondroitin, and even better when combined.

Hyaluronic Acid is a nice addition as it help the body produce joint lubrication.

You seem to really enjoy delving into research on topics which is great, and interesting for all of us with your links. But I would not start giving human medication or supplements until I ran it by my vet. Some things we take that are innocuous to us can be harmful to dogs. Your vet may take a look at the ingredient list and dosage and say it's fine.

The HA research is very interesting since I have only heard of it as an injectable in people, particularly for OA of the knee.

One supplement I've found very helpful for arthritis is green-lipped mussel. It is Omega 3's but seems to work much better than fish oil, which I've also tried. I use Super Snouts Joint Powder, it can be gotten on Amazon or Chewy, and it is not expensive. Like anything it doesn't work for everyone but after the change I saw in my dog, I started taking the human version and it definitely helped me. I did a double loading dose for about 3 weeks (two small scoops) and then backed off to one scoop daily.

Good luck and I hope you find something that helps Boots.

I gave that to Gavin for a while. back when I was hoping supplements would help. I think we used it for 6 months?
But no supplement really helps neuropathy, so we stopped. gabapentin and CBD treats are what we use now.

Zulu has early arthritis in his left hip. He has been on Super Snouts for over a year and has had no flare ups since he started. Works for him!

I really appreciate all your research on the Now medication for joint pain. My pharmacist switched me from BioFlex to the Now brand. I found it very helpful for me and my joint pain.
A couple thoughts :
It helps but I still have pain in my joints. I would not give Teddy this based on how much medicine per pound is required to get any relief. I would check with my Vet for something more specific to dogs. and I would defer to Cindy because of her experience with Gavin.
I hope you can find something cost effective to give Boots some relief

Sharon, I agree on wisdom of running this by my vet.
Nice thing about human grade cGMP certified is if its in the product it must be on the label. If my vet indicates concern I'll update this thread.
Also tried the GLM treats for a couple weeks however didn't notice any help. I'll try again if this current combo does not help.

Cindy, my Mom, sister and BIL are on gaba so I will look into that if he doesn't get relief soon. I almost got into the CBD CO2 distillation business a while ago so I know some people report it works ok for pain. Probably try it before gaba.

Ron, I like NOW in general because they are in the US and directly subject to FDA, and they seem to have nice reputation for being simply reasonable, no drama, no real advertising, etc.
You really might want to take a look at the Dr's Best I mentioned if you have real joint pain.
The Type II Collagen seems to work better than the normal Glucosamine/Chondroitin from recent studies. Add to that there is Glucosamine/Chondroitin in the product, along with MSM and HA.
And recent peer research I've done on each show they all seem to work to varying degrees, however I don't think there are many products which actually combine them like this.
I will be going to the vet again, however I would like to avoid NSAIDs or other Rx stuff until known good alternatives have been tried.

Chris, thanks I will keep that in mind in case the OTC don't suffice.

gabapentin works for mostly pain relief in combination with other drugs. It has as synergistic effect (more than expected based on a +b).
I don't want to say that the NOW supplement doesn't work for its intended purpose, just that the intended purpose wasn't relevant to Gavin.
and he didn't suffer any bad side effects.

I have four seniors; one who's nearly 16, one 12, one 9 and one who's 7 but has had both hips replaced. I do give them Cosequin...there's a great deal to be said for supplements formulated for dogs, and it works.

They also get Super Snouts Green Lipped Mussel as Sharon suggested. It's wonderful and has helped the stiffness the two older ones have a great deal.

I also give T-Relief, which is a human product, but there is also a version made for pets. There is no discernable difference between the two except, as you noted, the price, so I use the human grade one. The base ingredient is Arnica, which is a natural remedy for pain relief. My two older ones get one variety in the morning and another at dinner. This combination of meds seems to work very well for all of them.

Ann, do you mind sharing the info for the T-relief you use? Faith is now 10 and by the end of the day I do see more stiffness than either she or I would like.
