At what age do you trust them?

Usually about 12 months - after they've finished the adolescent 'gonna pee/poop in the house again' stage. Kismet has been very lucky and had free rein pretty much all the time, she worked out how to get out of the xpen at 8 weeks and my back was so bad I couldn't often bend over to lock the crate. And that is probably why, at 14 months, she is still chewing inappropriate things.

We found out that Luke wasn't ready for being out of crate when we went for our first vaccine shot and I ended up in emergency.not due to vaccine.due to the heat. Little Luke ate a leg off lamb chop and chewed open an end of husband's pillow and pulled out stuffing which he thankfully didn't eat

Hollie was hardly in her crate at all. She absolutely hated it and it was horrible. So we left her out almost from day 1 and she was perfect. Never misbehaved.

Shelby on the other hand was a terror puppy. . She was in her crate until at least 3 years old. She loved chewing EVERYTHING and could not be trusted. She eventually learned how to open her crate door and greeted us one day after work. Nothing was chewed so we the gave her freedom.
