Barking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have one crazy barker - Cooper; one moderate barker - Meggie and one who rarely barks - Lottie.

Cooper literally drives me crazy! But I know enough to take at least part of the blame. Summer here is so hot that we barely spent any time outside. He was going stir crazy and needed more exercise.

It has started cooling off and we've spent a lot more time outside in the yard and walking after work. A tired dog doesn't bark as much!

Lottie, that little girl is a dream. She barks in excitement when I come home, but other than that she rarely barks. She looks at Cooper as if he's lost his mind, and sometimes I wonder that too!
 
On rare occassion, I would use a (no pea) Referee Whistle at close range to interrupt an unwanted behavior. The concept is the same as a shake can, except it's a zillion times louder.

I used that method, when I trained him not to chase squirrels.

My problem is multi tasking. I can't answer the phone, conduct an adult conversation (usually with a business contact), throw treats, hiss STOP BARKING and sound intelligent. Sigh. I've taken to just saying "would you like to say hi to my dog?" So professional....:rolleyes2:

Agreed. I gave my boy the "quiet" signal, kneeled down next to him, and gave him my "be a quiet little boy" lecture in a very soft tone of voice. He carefully listened...

God, I miss hearing his happy little joy barks... (I could never bring myself to "criticize" joy barking.)

And I would give anything to hear my Angel's barking at me as I walked down the stairs. They are noisy, but missing them is worse than any noise they can make.......:sadsmile:
 
The pet corrector seems like a nice concept. But I don't want to pay for a bottle of AIR... that's just me lol alfie is starting his barking career. Any useful tips to stop him from barking at my dad stirring coffee? ==

Barb it does not work.Shadow's obedience trainer from when he was a puppy gave me a couple last year and it had no affect on him at all.A water bottle or an empty soda can with pennies in it has the same affect has the pet corrector.
 
Claussen ( 1 yr) has always been super quiet, while Little Bear (11 mos) has always been super barky-well-maybe not super...he's never barked at anything "silly". When he tried barking at the vacuum I put him on a leash and had him walk with me while I vacuumed. He never had any qualms with the vacuum again. The only problem I have with him is his barking when we arrive home from being away (any amount of time) and always when I let him out to potty unless he's sleepy. That's the only thing I wish I could control...I don't want to annoy my neighbors. If he barks, I ask him to lie down, and I gently hold his muzzle and say quiet. But he will continue to try to yip right through it. He knows what quiet means, BC after I ask for it, and he barks again, he looks at me warily and lays right now. He's like "sorry mom I know that's wrong but I gotta!" Could be a lot worse I guess. My advice is lots of desensitizing. I need to spend more time bringing him back in the house every time he barks outside.
