Barking

I brought home friday a 7 week old sheltie. He has done very well and whimpered a few times at night is all. At what age do they begin to bark? He hasnt even came close to doing that yet.
 
I don't think there is a specific ages for Shelties to begin barking. Some bark from very early on (while still at the breeders), others will go a while without making a peep, and then all the sudden they've found their voice!
 
Shelties bark at all different ages. The puppy I am getting in two weeks has barked since he was 3 weeks (now 6 weeks). Where my parents got a new Sheltie puppy back in November and he actually didn't find his bark until I started playing with him (which I had to get him in play mode by barking since he had a broken leg and was shy and really hasn't been allowed to play) and he was 2 1/2 months old. If your puppy is your only sheltie, it will find it's bark, but may take longer. With my puppy I am getting, he is a litter of 7 and also the breeder has 12 other dogs (she is a vet which the other breeds consists of more shelties, goldens, dalmations etc), he has been taught by the other dogs. So... long story short, it will come when the puppy is ready to make an appearance with his bark.
 
Seven weeks is very early to separate a puppy from the litter. Usually they are with their mothers until at least 8 weeks. Most don't go to homes before 9 weeks. So your pup is still quite a baby. Be careful what you wish for...the barking will come soon enough!
 
That is true Ann he is away from his mom early. Zak was quiet when he was younger and around 2 or so he really found his voice. He is not bad really but does bark at some people that walk by- lately it has been door bell's on tv. What is your pups name? Tell us more about him?

At five months, Dickens rarely barks, unless instructed to. Sometimes he'll let out a couple of woofs at the neighbors' beagles, but for the most part he's pretty quiet. I was actually hoping he could earn his keep as a watch dog, but it won't break my heart if he doesn't turn out to be a barker. Some of the stories I've heard are frightening!
 
Angus only moaned and groaned for the first few months we had him home (just over 2 months old when he came home), and finally barked at about 5 months old. He isn't much of a barker still only on very special occasions....still prefers sighs, moans and groans.....:lol:
 
Congratulations! You own one of the dog breeds that are known for barking :/ haha! Oh how much I would have wished I would have been more of an adult when we first got our shelties... *sigh* oh well. They are great to have as long as you exercise and keep them trained, otherwise they WILL bark ALL THE TIME! Trust me, my dog did. Best of luck to you :)
