Belle never barks..

When Precious first came, I've never hear her bark too and was happy that she didn't. Till the day she got familiar with the house after one month, she starts to increase the frequency of her barking. Not much but sufficient to keep my place noisy.

Holly doesn't bark either...she was 4 1/2 when I got her and she didn't bark at all for the first 2 months...I was worried she couldn't. Then all of a sudden one day she let out a single yap when she heard the neighbour's door. Since then she's had 7 single yaps (in about a year). So cute, and am glad she's not a barker. :biggrin2:

I would be glad as well. Our Mally is a "Barker Supreme!"

Her Ladyship hasn't let out a a single woof since we brought her home a little over a week ago. My angel Neechee was an incorrigible non-stop barker (I can't tell you HOW many times we disqualified in Novice A).

She had two foster homes before me, and after some investigation I did find out that Her Ladyship does bark, and quite loudly when she settles in. She probably hasn't barked yet because she's now an only dog and there's nobody to get her started.

Hubby (who is totally unfamiliar with Shelties) read an article about puppy mills and how they sometimes debark the dogs. Bela came from a puppy mill, and he was aghast that she might not be able to bark.

OK, here's my deep dark secret. I've been trying to induce her to bark by barking myself. (No, I'm not crazy, and I do a great imitation of a Sheltie bark.) She just looks at me like, "You have GOT to be kidding me." So for now, I'm counting my blessings. She'll bark eventually and I probably won't be able to shut her up.

I hope you are counting your blessings and you know you DID win the sheltie lottery, for sure hahaha as the others said....
Also famous last words, I certainly remember saying Toffee was a quiet boy, in my intro a couple of years ago...

I know my little guy barks more now that he has a companion. One can get the other one going pretty easily.

Once she's completely comfortable, however, she may become rather vocal if that's a trend she's shown in foster homes.

I just want to clarify one, quick, thing about debarking...
Debarking does not mean the dog cannot bark. The more proper term would be "Bark Softening".

(All: Please don't start a discussion about whether or not to debark in this thread; that isn't my intent. There are many threads about this already, we don't need to hijack this one.)
