Cali is currently out of her meds and is due in a few days for a re-up. She has been on both Frontline and K9Advantix and so far we have had no problems. I found that Petsmart now sells Advantix OTC and it will be cheaper and more convenient then getting it from the vet. What do all you other east coasters use? I live in a area that has alot of deer unfortunately so I have to keep her on it constantly. Ideas?
Best flea/tick meds for the east coast?

I have used Frontline here in Maryland, it is 100% useless. I have also used K9Advantix, and had a dog have a reaction. It worked, but I'd rather not have reactions.

I don't like using chemicals, since Pixie began having seizures while on them, so I use Sergeant's Natural Defense. Much cheaper than the Frontline/Advantix etc. repellants, no nasty side effects unless you can't stand the smell of cloves, and it works as well as the pricey chemical stuff does. (And we're in Connecticut where ticks are the state bird) You can find it at Cherrybrook online or at CareALotPets.com which is the cheapest I've found it, and in a lot of the stores but it's more expensive there. We use the 15 lb and under size, nothing higher no matter what they weigh.

I also dont like using chemicals and poisons. I use NaturVet Holistic Flea and Tick Spray. One spray and havent seen a flea since (knock on wood). Your dog will smell like cedar for an hour or two.

My pups were on regular Frontline or some other....I can't remember....until the vet found a tick on Bacca's eye. Immediately, she switched us over to K9Advantix and I plan to use it again this year (I've got a call into the vet already to get them to order it).
The downside of K9 is you can't use if you have cats. I don't remember the reason why (I know I posted this on the forum before).
But if you are in tick zone, and not opposed to meds, then I would stick with the K9

Well twiddle Barb..I never knew that.We have used K-9 advantix previously on Earnie before the two puppies joined the family.And at the time we had Bumper.Is it that it can't be used on cats,or on a cat that is in contact with a dog that has it on?
I'm so PO'd right now. I just bought flea/tick medicine yesterday. I've always used K9 Advantix because in addition to everything else it repels mosquitoes which are a problem here. But yesterday when I was looking at the packages I swear the K9 Advantix didn't say anything about ticks. I thought maybe they changed the formula and I ended up buying Frontline, reluctantly.
After seeing this thread I went to the K9 Advantix website and sure enough it still says that it repels ticks. I don't know what I was looking at yesterday, but I hope my $65 isn't wasted on something that won't repel the ticks here. Ugh!!!!
NOTHING worked against the ticks in Syracuse, but down here in FL the Advantix always worked well.

As far as contact I don't think its a big deal really. My Cali has been on the Advantix for a bit and I also have a kitty. He is pretty nosey but has had no adverse effects from sniffing her back after I medicate her. My cat is strictly indoors and really the only thing I worry about for him is keeping up on his heartworm meds so I give him revolution. I wish there was a all in one med like this for our pups!
In addition to the regular method of flea/tick prevention, I also have a little ritual in the summertime. I brush my furpups almost every evening (expecially in the spring/summer). Before I do this, I spray them with a little bottle of water that has a few drops of clove oil (you get used to the smell... it isn't unpleasant, but very... earthy) and a few drops of lavender (to balance the clove and it smells nice). I haven't had a problem once I started this - and in humid Florida, we get lots of opportunities for our dogs to bring them home!
