Blowing coat or losing coat?

Hi Everybody, haven’t been here for ages. Hope everybody is well. Question about undercoat? Does your Sheltie’s undercoat get really thin this time of year? Mindy has lost almost all her undercoat. I’m not sure if she’s just blown it, getting ready to poof out for the upcoming winter or if it’s from her low dose prednisone. :(

It is shedding season. Our house is like living in a snow globe! And it's the undercoat they're losing, preparing to fluff up for the winter. Frequent brushing will help speed it up, along with warm baths.

I've heard that long term use of higher doses of prednisone can contribute to hair loss, so if you suspect this is a cause, I'd let your vet know. S/he may want to adjust her dose.

Her prednisone is down to 1.5 mgs daily from 7 mg so I’m really hoping it’s not that! We can’t go any lower without becoming symptomatic.

That doesn't sound like a high enough dose to cause coat loss. I'd just ride this shed out and see if her coat fills in over the coming months, since so many are shedding now. Maybe mention it to your vet the next time you see him.

Ann, I can picture your whole living room in a snow globe! Six shedding shelties and all those sheltie knicknacks! What a great idea!

One of the side effects of living in the bay area and having a relatively mild climate means no significant blowing of coat. So Gavin never really poofs up, but his coat never thins out either. Our probable upcoming trip to StL in winter might alter that, but Gavin won't be outside too much in the super cold anyway,
