Blue buffalo dog food?

I ended up deciding that I was just going to go to tractor supply and look for all natural canned dog food, rather than drive 45 minutes to petco (TSC is just down the road)

They have nutro canned dog food, and blue buffalo. I went with the blue buffalo. I think I will order better treats through petco online.Right now they get milk bone. I figured it would make shipping cost more if I bought a big pack of canned dog food. And since I am sorta on a tight budget its so much easier for me to get a few cans at a time rather than 10+

I got the salmon blue buffalo here are the ingredients.

Ingredients: Salmon, Chicken Broth, Chicken, Ocean Whitefish, Carrots, Peas, Sweet Potatoes, Asparagus, Whole Ground Brown Rice, Whole Ground Barley, Oatmeal, Guar Gum, Salt, Flaxseed, Blueberries, Cranberries, Potassium Chloride, Carrageenan, Cassia, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Niacin (Vitamin B3), Calcium Pantothenate (Vitamin B5), Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Thiamine Mononitrate, Folic Acid, Biotin, Zinc Amino Acid Complex (source of Chelated Zinc),Iron Amino Acid Complex (source of Chelated Iron), Copper Amino Acid Complex (source of Chelated Copper), Manganese Amino Acid Complex (source of Chelated Manganese), Sodium Selenite, Calcium Iodate, Choline Chloride.


And this is what there WERE getting
Chicken By-products, Sufficient water for processing, Chicken, Brown Rice, Brewers Rice, Carob Bean Gum, Sodium Tripolyphosphate, Carrageenan, Minerals (Potassium Chloride, Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide), Vegetable Oil, Guar Gum, Dried Yam, Vitamins (Vitamin E, A & D3 Supplements, D-calcium Pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate {Vitamin B1}, Biotin), Bay Leaves.

Am I really doing that much better? I know that Pedigree (above) has chicken by products but other than that I dont see what is that bad. It has far less ingredients.
 
You are doing much better, always good to stay away from by products.Your food should always start out with a protien first. I have a friend on line that is a rep for Bue and she just loves it.
I also use salmon oil on Maggies food.
 
On the dog food analysis web site its only listed as a 3 out of 6 stars, which isn't very good. I'm not sure why though, as the review isn't complete, usually there is a breakdown of the ingredients.

I'm not impressed with the Guar Gum ingredient, I'm 90% sure that it's a low grade filler.

Carrageenan is a thickening additive that has no nutritional value for. I read that it can cause digestive upset in people so I'd think the same in dogs.

It also doesn't say anything about being ethoxyquin free. Ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish ingredients and which is banned or heavily regulated in human food production, due to the belief that it is carcinogenic.

I'd stay clear of this food without reading into it more.

It is better than what they were getting. By-products should never be the first ingredient. You basically have no idea what it is.

Have you thought of Flint River Ranch? They deliver it right to your house with free shipping and no tax. My dogs absolutely loved it. Probably their favorite...I feed California Natural now, because I was bad about ordering on time. So then the dogs would run out of food and I would have to go buy a sample bag of something. California Natural I can buy at the store, so it is easier for me.

It was a good brand though. Good dog food, the dogs liked it, reasonably priced, and the internet store is very promt and has good service.

Which Nutro is it? If it's Nutro Max or Natural Choice, then it's not that great. The Nutro Ultra is holistic & rated 4 stars. My Max(the dog not the food:lol:) thrives on this. I've tried feeding him higher rated food, but for whatever reason, it doesn't agree with him. :rolleyes2:

You have made some very good points here some that I did not pick up on and I need to ask my friend who is a rep for them about the carrageenan and the ethoxyquin. I know that one is a bad ingrediant.

Thanks Aztec, I will look into Flint River Ranch. or maybe i will just drive 45 minutes to petco and buy a bunch of spots stew or natural balance. As much as I love my dogs I am not made of money though, so spots stew might be to pricey.

Doesnt hurt to see! Blue buffalo was $1.79 a can, I dont really want to spend much more than that.
 
I've been using Blue buffalo with my dog and both my cats (my sheltie I'm getting in a few weeks, after the chaos from the holidays finally leave)

Blue Buffalo start their food with human grade quality and make pet food out of it. With other brands, as one vet reported, the by-products are non-human consumption quality, which could range from spoiled food, to an animal with abscesses or worse. Many are filled with "filler" ingredients, most of which offer no nutritional value. And as a few years ago, even from countries of lesser standards, which can severely impact the pet food market.

When the whole grain pandemic went through that was killing American pets, Blue Buffalo did not have to issue a recall. Why? Because none of the affected ingredients are found in Blue Buffalo products. This was the primary reason I switched to Blue Buffalo.

They care about the quality of their products. When it was discovered a manufacturer had altered their recipes for a certain treat, they not only posted on their website, but sent out email alerts issuing a recall of the batch numbers. Where the products themselves unsafe? No. But they weren't the standard of quality Blue Buffalo required.

When I bought a bag of cat food and opened it, I found a fluke of some other type of matter alongside the cat food (it looked like dog food). Concerned about it, I called the customer service line, not really expecting a response. Not only did I get a full response, I received coupons and correspondence that lasted weeks beyond when I considered the case to be closed.

They're a company that stands behind their products, which to me is worth spending a little extra because it comes from a company I can trust.

Also to say my dog, Daisy, LOVES their treats would be an understatement.
