brushing

I'm really befuddled by all the grooming tools. With our shorthairs, all we do is a quick brush every so often. So this is really new to me!

What exactly do I need? An undercoat rake, pin brush, comb, and slicker brush?

In the past I used a slicker brush and an comb, I was never really shown the proper brushes for a sheltie. When I moved away my parents started having their dog groomed.

I still use a slicker brush as well as a comb for feathers (the fur on the backs of their legs) but for everything else I use a Furminator brush. Its expensive but does a great job removing the undercoat without damaging the top coat and its also great for working out small matts.

There is a thread in grooming dedicated to the furminator brush, some love it like me, others are on the fence and one person had difficulty using it. To me though it is a God send at was worth every penny. If you consider buying it, a word to the wise, don't by it at a store, buy it on Ebay! It will be much cheaper. I forgot to mention, if there are white flakes you may want to supplement your dog's diet with something that will help his dry skin. I bought something at the pet store but I'm at work now and don't remember what it was called. Basically you want something with Omega 3 fatty acids in it, will help the dry skin and make the coat shiny
 
First, I give a nice brushing out with a long (http://www.chrissystems.com/brushes.htm 1 1/4" PIN LENGTH, 8 1/2" TOTAL BODY LENGTH, 35 mm) pin brush. Best brush I've ever owned. Well worth the money. I line brush (comb, really) with a small tooth comb everywhere.

I never use a slicker unless I'm getting chalk off of their legs. I only use the pin brush and the comb.
 
A medium steel pin brush works well for the sheltie coat. You may also want to get an undercoat rake to help remove the loose fur under the long outer coat. If your dog has white flakes on his skin he probably has dry skin. A Omega 3.6 and 9 capsule three times a week will help him with the flaking skin. You can get 400 mg tablets at the grocery store. Be careful using a slicker on the dog in areas where the fur isn't thick it can scratch the skin and cause pain. Something else you might consider getting is a steel comb. I use mine to comb through the skirt and keep the hair free of mats and tangles.
 
I learnedto pay the extra to get rounded pins. If the pins are cut off straight, it irritates the poor Sheltie's skin! Ouch! :eek2:
 
Another thing for coat and skin is something called Yumega, Ive heard really good reports about it.

Ive bought a Mason and Pearsons whilst Jake is a pup, just to get him used to being groomed, along with a water spray bottle just to being used to being sprayed, but will gradually introduce a pin brush and slicker. I also have a FURminator from my Inuit boy.
