so as most people know, Callie has had recurrent ear issues. so some time ago, took her up to the vet for another ear issue- while there, she stopped eating the cookies I was giving her. so I asked the vet to check her teeth too- which he always does anyway. and her found a red spot on her back gum and yeasty smell in ear. went home with drugs- ear and gum cleared up and in she went to get the 'bad tooth' out. xrays and 5 teeth later, she's home and pretty normal- except for her chewing being a little different.
I clean her ears every night and noticed maybe a week ago that her ear was crappy again but looked different. emailed the vet to let him know about it....
then this past Friday evening, she had what looked like a seizure. got a vid clip and sent to vet. he agreed with seizure and said wait and see. then when I emailed him Sat that she had another- he said if it kept up, she'd need meds. and then she had another on Sunday and he said he'd work up a plan and let me know.
so last night when I cleaned her ears- was more yellow than brown so he said he wanted to do a culture. lucky for me, a friend who also goes to this vet already was taking one of her dogs there today and had already offered to monitor Callie since she was going to be working at home so she could go to the vet. so I asked her to take Callie along.
culture won't be back til Monday probably but vet said he was concerned that Callie might have canine dementia. she has been a little more disoriented the last 4-6 weeks but I was putting it down to her ear/teeth issues.
so seeking experience and information regarding canine dementia........:rolleyes2:
 
Sorry to here this. Dow might have had it. His last 6 months (maybe more but for sure that long) he would just get lost on his way across the room. Eventually he even would forget me once in a while. He was in serious decline by then as he was 15 and slept 23 hours or more a day and I think might have had inner issues as well. Overall though as bad as that sounds he still got around and was generally happy. He did decide he had free pass on all rules though and became a stinker (and he was right :sadsmile:)
 
I'm sorry, I have not much info to offer but I simply wanted to send a cyber-hug your way:hugs. I will be keeping Callie in my thoughts as you wait for the results.
 
I don't have anything to add, either, but I am thinking of you and Callie and hope the vet has some good news for you.

Gosh we are so sorry to hear this news about Callie. I sure hope the vet can figure things out. Sending lots & lots of hugs to you & her.

She is such a precious dog.I just hate to hear news that she is not well.

Miss Callie...you have got to get better ya hear!! Who else is going to make sure these "youngins" behave at the gathering? :hugs
 
Poor girl. How old is Callie?

My first thought with the confusion would be an underlying ear (possibly inner ear) problem. I say this as my mum has Menieres Disese (vertigo caused by crystals in the ear) and when she has it she can be disorientated because of her head spinning. As she improves from an attack she can be woozy and if she moves her head wrong the room spins, so she can't turn her head in certain directions or lay down flat.

Now, as a person she knows this and avoids the triggers, but a dog won't realise this and may accidentally trigger a dizzy episode and thus appear disorientated.

As for doggy dementia, my friend's Goldie is now at the stage. She wandered into the living room at her home the other day and didn't seem to know where she was and had to bark to be rescued. My friend put a mirror in the room and this seems to comfort her as she can see herself - quite odd.

And then there is my trainers GSD Beemer who is badly epileptic and has an underdeveloped brain. He is 4, and over the last year every time he has a seizure he comes back as a different personality. They have been giving every personality a name, the current one is Clive who is very naughty and sulky.

But I would be betting on the ears.

Awww we had an English Pointer named Callie who had bad dementia her last year with us. She would wander off in the fenced in yard, I lived in fear of her getting out & getting lost. She was the sweetest girl & as long as she got her meals & walkies she was happy. Even when she could barely get up, she had to walk her daddy every day. Some days she went to the corner & back & was happy with her 'walk.'

I hope your Callie's issues are more related to her ear problems, but if it's dementia, maybe not the end of the world. The most important thing we did was keep a close eye on her whereabouts at all times. Luckily for us, she was a sweetie till the end, albeit a very confused sweetie!:sadsmile:
 
I'm so sorry Callie is not feeling well. :(

I never knew dogs could get dementia.

I hope the vet can figure out what is going on with her ears. Keep us updated.
