Help! Tonks won't stop trying to chase cars when I take her for walks... nothing seems to work to curb this behaviour. Can anyone help?

You have to get Tonks attention on you by using very tasty treats like tiny pieces of chicken or hotdogs.
Each time Tonks attempts to chase a car have a piece of yummy food in your hand the attention will go directly to you....or at least it should !!!!
as soon as he looks at you give him the treat.

It won't take long for him to realise your a better option, Good luck.

This is much easier using a clicker as the dog learns quickly tasty food comes when he hears the click.

Welcome Chasingamanda

When you bring Tonks for his walk isn't he on a leash ? :confused2: If he is maybe changing his lead to a head halter lead. The one that goes around his muzzle. They claim you have better control on a dog that is on lead this way. Then incorporate what Linda suggests and you should be going in the proper direction with Tonks. Its worth a try. The head halter leads up my way go for about $15.00.:smile2: Good Luck and let us know how you make out with Tonks !!

Sparky doesn't like delivery trucks, or the garbage trucks and if given the opportunity, will chase after them. I can only hold him back if we're outside away from the fenced yard, otherwise, he'd be gone. Thankfully, our street has a clear view from one end to the next and I can see and hear if a delivery truck is approaching.

We've had pretty good luck with what was recommended while at Petsmart training. It works pretty well for cars or other distractions. We have Chase "watch me" by showing him a piece of food/snack and bringing it up to our forehead so we make eye contact. It took a few weeks but he got the hang of it and now just about any time we pass a car he'll look right up at us and ignore the car alltogether. We don't reward with food all the time but just enough to make it worth his while to focus on us. Most of the time he just keeps trotting along and will look at us when asked, and sometimes even before we can say anything he'll do it on his own. As mentioned, it works of almost anything that gets his interest such as kids playing, bikes and skateboards, etc.

Great idea Preston, I think I'll try it! I keep forgetting to take snacks with me when we go on walks, as I am usually more concerned with the doggy duty sack, but treats should definitely help with her jumping up on the kids and trying to chase the bikes.
