Car Seat Protector

I just leased a new car this weekend and am looking for something to protect the back seat from dog stains and scratches.

My dog is restrained in the car with a seat belt harness. She is in the car at least once a week, so I definitely need something.

She did scratch the leather seats in my old car. If she hears or sees a dog barking, she will bark and scratch. I only used a towel or thin blanket with my old car. I owned it, so I didn't worry about stains or scratches.

So if any of you purchased or heard of a good rear seat cover, please post info on it. :biggrin2:

Do you want something you can easily remove? Or something more permanent? If permanent, I was thinking a real car seat cover. I'm sure Costco or places like that have cheaper ones that are "universal".

If you're looking for cheaper and easy to remove, I'd suggest something that won't slide on the leather (the two I have used, either Koji slides on it, or it slides on my leather), making it basically useless. Since you have leather, waterproof isn't as necessary, but definitely find something you can wash.

I also try to stay away from those fake lambskin type ones as they seem so hot. I wouldn't want to lie on that after training for an hour and sweating and then going into the car. Yuck. So I don't do it for my dog.

Can't wait to hear what people suggest. I'm thinking about putting in a permanent neoprene car seat cover (custom to fit), so that I don't have to mess around with it. But that costs money I don't have right now. Maybe later.

One more thing to think about....does your car have airbags? If so, you don't want something that'll cover it.

Great response Cheryl!

I got a little impulsive and purchased one before everyone responded :eek2:.

I went with this one:

I did want something that I could remove because I don't want my passengers to have to sit on the doggie seat covers when Bailey isn't with us.

I do have leather, but I don't think this one will slide around too much and I don't think it will cover any airbags.

LOL. As long as you're happy with it, then it's great!

Let me know how it is. The one I have that looks like that was really slippery. I would hit my brakes to hard, and Koji, who'd be lying on it when he was in the cargo area (seats are down), he's slide forward. LOL. He hated it. I may regift it for my Christmas thing. It's nice, just too slippery.

The second one I bought, it slides on the leather. Sigh. So Koji eventually ends up off of it. And he's already scratched up my leather and my door (darn him for being reactive).
Oh well, he rides in the crate now.

Oh you meant your dog slides around. I thought you meant the cover would slide.

Bailey is attached by a harness. I don't think she can really slide anywhere, but that is a great point. The material in the one I purchased does look like she will slide. Sigh... I should've thought about that. I guess I'll see what happens.

New car! What is it? That's so fun.

I have the same problem in my car. I've used blankets, towels, etc...and they just end up falling off or the dogs end up standing on the leather somehow. Luckily I almost never have the dogs in my car, and Lexi tends to just lay down.

I actually meant both. With one, Koji slides around. With the other, the cover slides around. And yes, with Bailey in her ultra cute harness, she won't slide. I just put that out there, just in case.

BTW, what did you lease?

My dog is secured with a seatbelt harness, so if I brake hard or stop fast, she doesn't fly all over the back seat. That's why I don't need a hammock seat cover and I didn't want one, because I don't want to have hammock in the backseat all the time. I think it looks silly. My dog is in the car so often, that I wouldn't take the cover on and off all the time. The only time I plan on taking it off is when she is not in the car and I have passengers.

I did look into the Kurgo non-hammock backseat cover, but they only had beige and I wanted black to match my interior.
