Casey and his prescription kidney food

I second Rachael's recommendation. She told me to get it last year when I was having all the gastric issues with Liam - it was a life-saver.

Vet food mostly sucks, but it does have its place on a short term basis.
Dogs with kidney or liver disease have several choices.....surgery....expensive and no guarantees, or a controlled diet and meds.

That is what I'm doing with Bacca with his liver shunt. The miracle for him seems to be lactulose. I've read that this is also helpful for dogs with kidney disease as well. Ask your vet about it, or google it.

And yes, a reduced protein diet. Not as much as my vet would like, but good enough that its still decent food. I'm feeding Blue Senior currently. To go lower protein I might switch to NB Veg but still better than the vet food, I think,

Lactulose seems to divert toxins from entering the blood stream to the brain. Bacca still has his off days, but his "on" days are more often....

Have you thought about home cooking food with a recipe from a nutritionist? I ask, because Miko was diagnosed 2 years ago with kidney disease and although he ate the Rx stuff, I didn't want to feed it to him. His numbers may have declined, but he's been pretty stable. Actually the only thing out of whack now is his BUN. Creatinine and phosphorus levels are all within range (he's got other issues, so it's not perfect). cooking his food isn't easy, but at least he loves eating his real potatoes, chicken, and peas (or other items I substitute at times).

Cheryl, I don't cook. I'm a terrible cook. Generally anything that comes off my stove is not fit to eat. *sigh* My grandmother (she raised me)was a FABULOUS cook. Unfortunately, you stayed out of her kitchen until it was time to eat.

I don't cook either. In fact, I hate cooking. But, I cook for Miko. You can also buy homecooked food ready made from companies like Just Food For Dogs. They make it and send it to you. It's not cheap, but it could help him.

I figured I'd give you some alternatives to food that your pup will most likely eat and it'll help keep his k/d stable (hopefully). Versus feeding him his regular food, that he likes, but could make his k/d worse....or him not eating that Rx food.

Me again....home cooked is probably the best answer for Bacca as well. But like you, I don't cook. I can, but I hate it. So like you I've looked for other lower protein diets that don't require me at the stove.
Yeah, maybe that makes me a terrible mom, but so far, whatever I'm doing seems to be working for Bacca now! It's actually jumping up again and excited about food...though still won't eat in the kitchen....only will eat in my bedroom or bathroom with the door closed. Silly boy!

p.s. I've discovered that switching around proteins seems to work well with him in his wet food. He used to love Weruva, now he's nuts about venison.

Thanks, Barb! Currently we're doing Blue and changing the "flavor" every meal. He seems to be doing just fine.

Although I did find a runny "pile" in the dining room this morning. Not 100% sure it was Casey but he's the first suspect. No one seems to be acting any differently so once again, Mom is watching all 3 closely!
