chewing feet

So my blue merle guy Frosty has been chewing his two back feet and legs over the last couple of weeks. It has gotten to the point where they are constantly damp and pinkish stained. Just today I noticed they look much worse, very red and like the beginning of hair loss, and I'm taking him to the vet hopefully on Monday...just wondering if anyone has ever had this and what it turned out to be. Allergies? Food or environmental? I've been having allergy issues lately myself so that's what I was thinking. My previous sheltie that I had growing up used to chew his feet and at the time we were told it was behavioral, but that sounds wrong to me.

I washed his feet today and rinsed them off really well...DH wants to spray bitter apple on them but I haven't done that...it says for coat chewing on the bottle, but I don't like the sound of it.

Tully does this to her front feet and the vet said it was an allergy. Also the locum vet suggested I bathe her feet in resolve or a similar (human) liquid antifungal as sometimes when they are licking on their feet they get a fungal infection (esp when it is constantly damp) and then the chewing starts.

During spring I try to wipe or bathe tullys feet after we go to a grassed area (like the oval) so it rinses off whatever is irritating and give it a good dry.

I can't say for sure in your case what's causing this, but we have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that has allergies to most green, growing things. He chews his feet incessantly, leading to discoloration of the beautiful fur "slippers" on his feet. Saliva causes the discoloration & it doesn't come out, without trimming.

We keep baby wipes handy & thoroughly wipe his feet, especially between the toes, when he comes in. He hates the outdoors because of this & only spends minimal time outside.

We had this issue too..allergies to grasses. So we had to wipe his feet good everytime he came in from outside.
The grasses must be different here in Germany..because we don't have this problem anymore...
