Chewing on wall corners

I would agree with Justice Mom - as long as there is still chewing going on, they are not ready to be let out.

I made the mistake with my forever pup, Timber, and came home to my couches completely chewed open.

With the boys, they were both crated during the day until almost 2 years old. I only put away the crates when I was selling my old house, because I had to put away the clutter. Otherwise, I'd probably be still crate training, and am now thinking about it again because of Indy's aggressive food stance these days.

Lexi and Kai'a are so similar. Kai'a to, around the 9 month mark, started chewing the corner of the walls and the decorative trim ... especially in the bathroom.

Since there is always someone home, and she is really a very good little girl, we only crate her at night and when we leave her alone. Strangely enough, her wall chewing happens when we are in the room with her, watching her like a hawk. I think it is attention seeking as she has never really been a chewer. We started day one, working on the chewing issue, and she got it pretty quick. Yes we have lost a shoe or 2 and a stray tissue or crumpled wrapper doesn't stand a chance against her, but she is really good it.

Bitter Apple. It was the only thing that worked. It helps that Kai'a hates the bottle and the sound of it spraying. Just taking it out in front of her and moving towards the area that is to be sprayed gets her whining and growling. We have had to do repeat applications on the bathroom wall, but it is the only thing that seems to work ... aside from a firm: LEAVE IT!

Hoping you are all happy and well.

Oh .. and I forgot to add. Yes, if there is a bigger issue with chewing, then they do need to be crated when they can't have the hawk eyes on them. Having gone through 4 dogs dogs it is the only way to really be assured to a) fix the problem and b) not lose all of your posessions to the munch monster.

I am going through exactly the same thing, but it has slowed down since they are now 10 and 7 months old. One pup will not go near anything sprayed with bitter yuck, and the other does not care, he will chew on it with the bitter yuck. We need to repaint the baseboards and two dented holes in the walls. I have no idea when they managed to achieve this goal as I am home with them during the day and they sleep in the crate at night.

Test

Just had to add that today I left her out for an hour, just to see what would happen. I DOUSED her favorite wall corner with bitter spray.

As soon as I got back to work, I turned on the webcam just in time to see her walk over to the wall and just disappear (it's out of sight of the camera). DH went home and she had chewed the wall even more.

So apparently the bitter stuff isn't working. I'm going to get another baby gate and make her free area smaller. Sigh.

That sucks, sorry to hear that. Oh well, maybe when she's older. :rolleyes2:

It seems like a common thing. I'm assuming it has to do with teething still. I know Miko chewed up the wood baseboards and the wall, down to the metal corner pieces. And he was the good boy. lol.

Koji did the same thing so I wasn't surprised. Like you, you just realize then, they're not ready to be let free. I have no idea why they like the corners (easier to bite?) or the drywall, but they do.

Oh, and Koji LOVED bitter apple. So that was useless. I even wiped it with chili pepper paste. He just licked it off then drank some water, lol. Didn't really phase him. Needless to say, he was cut off from all corners.

Surprisingly, up until last Thursday and today, he hasn't chewed on anything. But last week, he chewed up the bamboo back scratcher and today....well, see the photo. He dumped hubby's tie out of the box before chewing up the box. So weird. He's been great for months!

Poor Lexi. Maybe she can be free since you'll be home more. Maybe on a leash tied to you though. lol.
