Chewing! walls, shoes,

Dusty will be one year old in a couple of weeks. She has not been a problem chewer until the past month, and is getting worse.

She has a box full of dog toys, various rawhides and other chewy things, but has developed a preference for wood work, the corners of walls, and shoes. She has destroyed 3 pairs of shoes in the past week.

I thought at her age she would be past this!

Any suggestions, other than crating her anytime she is out of my sight? She is a very soft dog and thinks the world is scary until proven otherwise so I am concerned about being too hard on her.

(bitter apple doesnt bother her at all -I think she might even like it - like tobasco sauce)
 
This can pop up at the one year point. I recommend bitter apple on the wod and fierce "Leave it" commands.
 
I remember a pup we had that took a real liking to plaster also.don't know what it is about it,but once they do it the first time,they just can be devils about leaving it.
We resorted to making a dime size paste of cayenne & water mixed together,and rubbing that where the dog was chewing.She ruined a couch once to.Chewed the corner off the arm rest.After she got herself a good taste of cayenne,she learned her leasson.And doubled with a very stern "leave it"

Knock on wood,Trapp & Jasper have not found a liking to woodwork.Trapp ruined a room size rug we had on the sunporch.Had to be ditched. Even though the sunporch floor has an area that sends chills up my spine (damage from previous owner) we'll wait till these two are past stages where they will chew corners to put another rug down.
 
Yes I lost the wooden knobs on the chest of drawers - Tully would chew them in the middle of the night. She wasnt deterred from bitter spray either, but you could try vinegar, at one point I also had to wash their leads in vinegar to stop lead chewing too.

The other thing you could try is picking up a few sticks when you are out and let her chew on them. My Deska loves chewing on sticks so I keep some in the house. Dont know what it is about the texture of wood...
 
Whenever my husband uses the nail gun in the basement (his workshop is there), Beckon barks and attacks the trim beside the basement door. We tell him Leave it when we catch him, but DH is home alone with the furkids all day with no one to do the scolding. So we're waiting until the woodworking is finished to replace the trim. :rolleyes2:
