Choices--Breeder Pup or Gorgeous Adult

Hi! I actually did both. When Logan was 5 months old I decided that he really needed a canine sibling. I decide to get a 1 year old (Piper) from a breeder who was growing her out as a show prospect. I drove Logan up to PA, their play date went extremely well and we took Piper home. I discovered a few weeks later that Piper had been born with a congenital kidney disease. I love Piper and whatever time she has with us will be happy.

However, I wanted Logan to have a life long companion so I got him another sister, Holly. Their age difference is 8 months.

I will say that within a week of getting Piper, Logan was completely potty trained.

Holly's training was the easiest with the 2 older role models. They all get along great and are so close in age that their energy levels are comparable.

I have no regrets and frankly can't imagine my life without my 3 love bugs :smile2:
 
Here is the update: The breeder has decided to keep the gorgeous adult. Of course I am disappointed, but I totally understand. There is no way I could part with mine (case in point on why I am not a breeder!). I mean, there are all these dogs out there that are not loved nor appreciated and this is the exact opposite. Every sheltie---every dog really---deserves this total love.

So I emailed Stella's breeder about getting a puppy from their upcoming litter. Fingers crossed this will work out. I know we will eventually get the right new companion.
 
I don't blame the breeder either. If I had as little as 5 more minutes to think about it, Dixie would still be here with me, and I wish she were.:cry: I know you'll find the right dog eventually. Just keep trying and give yourself more options than just one puppy. Good luck!:smile2:
 
So we waited all fall and into the winter and within the last few weeks brought home Aspen--in the middle of the polar vortex we had to potty train. She is from my trusted breeder, a co-bred with outside kennel, so I guess Stella's half sister. I could not love her more. Another bi-blue female with lots of white and one "black" eye. I will post a picture once I figure out how to do it.

This choice works well for our family. Aspen is a ton of work--example my post about pottys on the puppy forum. But she is wholly ours to raise and make into our pet. Or she will make us into her family.

Stella is very good with her. Quite playful, zooming around. They tug pull ropes and chase each other. At times, Stella gets annoyed with her much like a younger sister relationship. Aspen always wants to play!

Thanks for your advise. I thought you might like to know what happened. 3 dogs will keep me topped off on the idea of a new sheltie for a while.

Welcome to your new home Aspen! I'm so glad you've found your forever friend!:biggrin2: Can't wait to see pictures, I bet she's gorgeous!

Stella sounds like she is going to do a good job taking over the role of sheltie mom and teacher...your helper in raising the wee tyke.
