Chronic Coughing/gagging

Chevy is seven years old and has had this cough/gagging since he was a pup. I’ve taken him to the vet many times for this. I just had X-rays done on Friday. The results are inconclusive. He used to do this upon exertion. But for awhile, he does it just laying down, as well.
Has anyone else experienced this with their Sheltie? Thank you in advance.

I am so sorry to hear Chevy is having this issue! My sisters senior Sheltie had the problem too. It turned out that she had a collapsing esophagus and an enlarged heart. She was on heart meds. You might need to see a specialist! Good luck and keep us posted!
Also, my senior Sheltie has chronic Bronchitis and he is on meds for that. My regular vet had no idea why we could not get the cough under control which is why we went to a specialist!

My mom's last dog (a Corgi cross) also had that problem. Turned out to be a weak esophagus...it helped to elevate her food and water bowl, reduced the amount she coughed. Good luck and I hope he feels better.

I would also think it could be an enlarged heart or CHF. I'd definitely check with a different vet if possible.

Brooke does this seasonally, as did Ally. It's like an allergic bronchitis with them. It sounds like she's a cat trying to bring up a hairball, and she's all phlegmy. Winter into spring, every year. Right now she's fine. But yes it can be a collapsing trachea. At only 7 I'd be surprised if it were CHF. I agree that a trip to a specialist vet might yield you more answers. Good luck.

Tully does cough and gag on two occasions. One is after she's had a drink of water, in which case she also throws up the water. I have no idea why she does it, but I did ask a specialist and they said it was nothing. I also had her trachea and lungs checked. She's being doing it for 11 yrs now so I've given up wondering why. The other time she does it is with hay fever, which she gets badly. She also snorts as well as coughs and gags,no sneezing. You could always try a hay fever medication, they are fairly safe so nothing lost to try it. Dogs can use human hay fever medication so talk to your vet about dosage. I find Phenergan works best for Tully.

Zulu does the water thing too. Not all the time, but enough for me to notice. I feel better now.

Flurry does this too frequently after she drinks, and it's been worrying me. I'm going to have it checked the next time she's in but it's good to know it happens to others.

Bailey also sometimes gags after she drinks water. She occasionally gags when she picks up a toy.

My girl is another one who does this. She occasionally gags once after drinking a lot of water, never food, only water. She also sometimes does this when picking up a toy as well. Vet has not seen anything wrong with her and she doesn't do it during walks or running around.
