Clicker

I'd like to be able to use a clicker with Josie, but she is pretty scared of it. I've been clicking and giving her a treat to try to get her to understand it's a good thing, but she still keeps backing off. I just started this tonight, is this the correct thing to do? Are there any other tips to getting a pup used to the sound of a clicker?

Cruz was sound sensitive as a wee one as well.. some clickers produce a "softer" click. You just have to hunt around a bit! You can also cover it with your other hand as you click to lessen the echo. Good luck!

for dogs that are really sensitive to the sound you could also use a ball point pen to make a softer "click" sound.

Karen Pryor clickers are much softer than the boxy ones you can get at petsmart and other various places. You can find some cheap knock-offs on Amazon that are basically the same thing. Also second the idea of putting it in a sock or your pocket to buffer the sound even more. Make sure you give a treat when you click so they associate the noise with good things!

Enzo didn't like the big boxy ones either. I did just as the trainer suggested - first I put it in my pocket to muffle the sound, then behind my back, which he didn't have a problem with. But as soon as I brought it in front of my body so it was louder, he would shy away. I asked our trainer about it, and she gave me a softer clicker and he has responded to it really well. So I second everyone else's advice to look for a quieter clicker. :smile2:

There's definitely different sound clicks. I sell 5 different types at my club, the box ones are the loudest - good for the hard of hearing. For really sensitive dogs I suggest trying a pen click to begin with until they get used to the sound. Pens have one of the quietist clicks.

As others have said they do make quiet clickers, which in some cases are actually better than the box style clickers.

One of the quieter clickers I like is the i-Click because you can click it no matter how you hold it - something you can't do with a box clicker. This allows you to palm the clicker and use your hand to muffle it a bit more.

These are the ones I'm currently using. They are similar to the i-Click in that I can palm them and hold a leash and the clicker in the same hand. They are also not very loud. (I couldn't beat the price either. I've had them for about 2 years now and they still work great.)

I like using those ones too. You can also set them on the floor with button facing down and click it by stepping on it. Good if you need both hands free.
