Cody met a 400 lbs black bear

We had some noise outside the back of our farm house at 10 00 PM and I went out to investigate with Cody on leash. Outside mauling the trash can was a huge black bear about 15 feet away. Cody was barking wildly and straining like crazy to go after the bear. Put the beam from the flashlight on the bear and luckily he scampered away in the dark. Told Cody going after a bear is not a good idea. We live close to the Appalachian trail and forest area so there is always wildlife around. But this time it was a little too close

I've met black bears a few times in my life either out on a trail or when I worked summers for the natural resources ministry here in Ontario. One of the things we did was to trap bears that had become nuisances at campgrounds. We had culvert traps on trailers. When bears went inside to take the bait the barred gate would slide down trapping them inside. We'd then hook the trailer up to the truck and take them deep into the wild via logging roads and then tie a rope to the trap door and run that rope to the pickup truck so we could raise the barred gate and release the bear. I was at the front tieing the rope to the top of the gate when my partner whacked the back of the trap with his hand spooking the bear which then ran straight to the gate scaring the heck out of me. My partner thought it was very funny. If wishes came true my partner would still be lost in the deep woods. I think I shaved a few years off my life that day.

We have them frequently in our back yard. They routinely destroy my bird feeders, even though I take them in every night. One afternoon, I found one sitting 10 feet outside my dog fence looking at the Shelties barking at him. I have an air horn I use to get rid of them but lately they just look at me like, "Really, lady?" I love the wildlife we have but I could do without the bears. I'm glad you and Cody were OK!
