Continental Kennel Club questions

My daughter was given a Sheltie puppy that was claimed to be pedigreed, When got the papers to register the puppy, I see that the litter is registered with the CONTINENTAL KENNEL CLUB. i have never heard of this registry. Does anyone know anything about this club? Is it a viable, respectable entity? Will I be able to double register this puppy with the CKC and some other registry?

Is it a viable, respectable entity?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but no, it is not. CKC pretty much exists so that less-than-reputable breeders can say that their puppies are registered. They don't hold shows or trials or maintain breed standards or clubs; all they do is take checks and send back registration certificates.

It is a favorite shelter for people who have been suspended or banned from AKC or UKC. Bans usually occur because a) dogs were being mistreated or b) the breeder was falsifying papers.

A pedigree is nice, but all it is is a listing of the puppy's (purported) ancestors. It doesn't guarantee anything other than that the puppy is purebred and the ancestors are recorded somewhere.

Will I be able to double register this puppy with the CKC and some other registry?

No, unfortunately not. You can, however, apply for a PAL (Purebred Alternative Listing) with AKC or a Performance Listing with UKC. These are limited registrations, which means that your dog would be able to compete in non-Conformation events (like Agility), but no offspring could be registered.

I am sure that your daughter's puppy is lovely, and I am so glad that she found her way to your family. Please don't take this as a reason to feel bad about the little dog. These are just the realities of the registry system in the US. The AKC is and remains the gold standard.

Don't believe everything you hear...

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Continental Kennel Club. Be warned that when CKC first started, it was another option for breeders and dog lovers alike and many people were threatened by this. So people took to the internet to smear CKC's reputation. It worked in the sense that people actually believe a lot of the rumors they read online, and many of these rumors date back to the early 2000s.

Some of the rumors you may hear are: CKC will register "anything" (some even claim they have registered hamsters and rocks, which I hope you know is a lie), that CKC is a favorite club of backyard breeders and puppy mills (which no one has any PROOF or statistics to back up), and that people only join CKC because they were kicked out of AKC (which is a definite rumor because MANY breeders are registered with BOTH clubs).

In the end, the quality of your dog depends on the individual breeder. There are bad breeders in EVERY club, including AKC.

CKC prides itself in having the best customer service, prices, and turnaround rates. I urge you to do your own research instead of believing what people tell you in forums. Because unfortunately, you often won't see the thousands of people who LOVE CKC on these forums, just the ones who hate them.

Here is their website: www.ckcusa.com

and that people only join CKC because they were kicked out of AKC (which is a definite rumor because MANY breeders are registered with BOTH clubs).

But if my dogs are registered with the AKC - the club that has maintained the stud book for my breed since the 1911 - and if they can be shown at AKC events, why would I want to cross-register them with a club that offers no events (OK, a handful of "sanctioned shows" in Columbia, Mississippi) and was founded in 1991?

As a breeder, why would I pay more (even the $5/dog bulk discount CKC offers to those who register more than eight dogs per year) to cross-list my dogs with what is the registry equivalent of a diploma mill?

If CKC is such an excellent registry, why won't the Canadian Kennel Club accept CKC-only Shelties for registration?

What Caro and Tofu Pup have linked to are great resources for evaluating CKC. I have heard for years about the nonsense of the registry but didn't actually bother to check out their site until today. If you compare what they list as attributes for the sheltie and the smooth coat variation :confused2: you'll notice that it deviates pretty widely in some areas from the standards set forth by the national and international breed associations. I'd be worried about 16" sheltie weighing only 16# (my petite 13" is ideally 16-17#) and "Temperament: High-spirited, yet very lovable."

ETA: Olive looks a good bit more like their "smooth coat" maybe I should start telling people she's a designer variation instead of just poorly bred? :D

Well, if you send CKC five photos of her and $50.00 (non-refundable!), and get two friends to say "Yup, she looks like a smooth-coated Sheltie", you can have yourself a fully-CKC-registered dog!

You can even breed her (as long as you breed her to another Smooth-Coated Sheltie, or something that looks enough like it) and register the pups with CKC! :biggrin2:

Wow,
Talk about getting what you asked for. Thank you, thank you, That is exactly the direction that I was inquiring for.
Based upon the information that I received from my daughter, about the puppy. She had received this puppy from friends who got together and decided to do this for her. From what I can glean from what my daughter can tell me, they got this puppy at a steep discount, when they found it for her. I suspected something was up when I heard that they got it at a deep discount. Then she brought me the pamphlet with the registration documents with it.
The document is from the Continental Kennel Club. The breeder has registered the litter, according to their web site.
I will NOT hold this against the puppy for being registered by this organization. He has no control with that. He is a wonderful puppy. He is occupying my time, now, instead of me grieving over Lily. There is the stigma tho, about him being a replacement for Lily. That is something that he will never do. The interesting thing about him, is the fact that he is still a puppy. He is dealing with new things around him and new things about his little body that he cannot control yet. He explores everything with his mouth, he uses his sense of smell, but has not learned just how powerful a tool that his nose can turn out to be. He has not found out how to use his tail yet either. At this time his tail is just an appendage that he gets to chase on occasion.
Even tho Lily has set a standard that can be impossible to follow, he will indeed have his own personality and his own persona, that we will recognize as being HIS, and love HIM and deal with that for its own merits.
Lily has proven to me just how easy it is to live with these wonderful creatures, and know that they too have ethics about themselves as well. Some of the things that made HER such a good house companion, could not be trained for. She was absolutely adored by the members of her pack(my family) but by my back-door neighbors, who routinely said that SHE was the sweetest and best that they had ever seen. There was not a time in our memory that SHE did not accompany me to their house, when I went to visit them. It had gotten so that they expected Her to enter their home ahead of me, anytime that I visited them.
Gus Gus will have every opportunity for a happy life that I have within my power to assure him of. I will let him set his own boundaries and let me know just how this bigger creature than He, can help him in his journey through life.
Just as Lily has shown me just how much she depended on me, I will let HIM show me, how much HE needs my help.
Right now, with HIM being still a puppy and needing my help and protection, I can do that, but soon, as he starts to learn who He is, I can back-off, as HE needs me to.
Lily was a pedigreed creature, but we did not use her to raise puppys. We even had her spayed before her first cycle. I would like to register the puppy, for the heck of it but the pedigree has no bearing upon how we will treat him, period. He is a living, breathing, thinking little creature, capable of receiving all the respect and love that we can bestow upon him.

Gus Gus sounds like a wonderful little guy - and it sounds like he is very lucky to have joined your family. I think you are taking just the right approach with him.

Of course your Lily is irreplaceable - and Gus Gus has some mighty big shoes to fill! But it sounds like you are going to let the new pup find his own way and become his own excellent little dog.

OK, now we need pictures! Please do start a thread for him over in our Puppies section. I know a whole lot of Forum members who would LOVE to swoon over a baby photo or two!

Then she'd be a whole other category since they would be miracle pups! (Texas law is that all adopted cats and dogs must be fixed) This makes me wonder if there's a CKC-minded breeder near where she was found since the rescue has had a couple over the years that looked like her, coat-wise)

Lilypop- LOVE the name Gus Gus! Definitely start a puppy thread about him!
