Corneal dystrophy

Hi Everyone

I bought mo mo to the eye's specialist today due to he got a white spot on his left eye. The vet said he got Corneal dystrophy, OMG !
and he gave me 2 eye gel to put on his eye.
The vet would like to see him back next weej to how the medicine are working?
Today I spent $ 400 for the bill, it's very expensive to see the specialist.
Any one have experience of Corneal dystrophy? and he said he may need the medicine for the rest of his life???
poor mo mo ..and corneal dystrophy is common problem for sheltie.
luckily he said he will not lose his vision of this case.
I have to work, and they only open on weekdays, it's hard for me to bring him to see vet. It's a big problem.
do you think I can bring him back to my normal vet to cure him ?
 
So the same dog that had JRD also had corneal dystrophy. She had eye goo, but only got it when she started to squint. No big deal, her mother had it too, but didn't show it until she was like 7.

And BTW, this dog is not in any way related to my current dogs.
 
I have seen a couple cases of Corneal Dsytropy in shelties. It is a different type of disease in the breeds that get it in some breeds very serious like the Airdale. In shelties, from what I understand it is a problem with the epitheial layer of the cornea. We know it is genetic but don't know for sure how it is passed on.:(

So in shelties, we tend to see corneal ulcers as the result. Sight is usually not loss. The eye drops will not cure the disease of corneal dsytrophy fortunately but if he has an ulcer it should help with that. The drops do help with the progression of the disease and helps prevent more ulcers from forming. Deep ulcers can be quite serious and may require debridement or surgeical management. Superfical ulcers usually just medication. Squinting, redness and tearing are the first signs of an ulcer.

As far as your regular vet managing Mo Mo disease. Talk with your vet and determine if they are comfortable with the management now that the diagnosis is known. Some are, some aren't.
