Could someone clarify about double merle?

I think the only problem with CHW's is that they cannot be shown. It's not an "approved" Sheltie color, so many breeders try to avoid it. But I don't believe it's related to disabilities (although I'm certainly not an expert).

I think CHW's and also sable merles are very pretty!

No not related to any disabilities, just a personal vendetta with some ASSA board member long ago with someone who had color headed, or so the story has been told....CHW Collies can be shown in AKC.

Thank you for the clarification everyone! I know LB's breeder has many CHW, and he has many titles in UKC. Gorgeous dog...they all are. Now, do people do double Merle breedings just to get more "distinctive" coloring?

no a breeding to a double merle dog will only produce blues(thats why people breed to DM), no matter if they are bred to a tri, it will still result in blues. Its also supposed to give a better clearer blue, that im not too sure on myself though...

Oh, I saw this photo provided by my breeder (they have a section explaining all types of sheltie colors and include pictures) of a double Merle so I thought it just meant they were mostly white with a little merling-so perhaps this wasn't the best picture to represent what a DM is then huh?

(I think this link is okay? There's no access to their site from this link..let me know if it's not allowed!)

Our boy (Levi) His mother is a double merle. She was fortunate enough to have been born with no genetic defects such as blindness or deafness, and has become a very decorated agility star. I'm not sure how they got a double merle, but I do notice slight differences between our boy Levi's coat and a standard bi-blue. The colors do seem a bit "crisper".
