Crate for 2?

OK say someone has one Sheltie (still young 6mos.) and is looking at adding a new Sheltie puppy to the family. Would you advise separate crates or one large crate for 2. I've had people come down on this both ways. Right now I'm leaning on a second crate. I do like good sized crates so they can move around. I think two crates would make it easier for many reasons. PS these will be in the same room.







No word on if this will happen yet but need to be ready for any questions that will come up.
 
Definitely two crates.

I say that for a couple reasons.

1--It gives them both a "safe haven" from each other. I know my puppy liked (still likes, in fact) to annoy her older brother. It was a nice respite for both of them to be separated at nap time, etc...

2--It helps the puppy to relax. I think having their own space makes it easier for them to relax.

3--Build confidence and independence. One thing that is important to remember if you have two dogs is to make sure that they don't wholly depend on one another. You want to make sure that you build a bond with each of them separately. It's harder to train if your puppy's main relationship is with their dog-sibling.


And the last thing I wanted to mention is that I do have 1 crate for the car. 2 crates don't fit properly, so we bought one big one for the car.
 
I completely agree with Ashely. A crate is your Sheltie's "den" and should be their place to go for rest, sleep, escape. And when you're out of the house and they're crated, they are better off in their own space. Even if they love each other, forcing them together all the time isn't a good idea.
 
Not much help here, I am like Ashley. Mine have one each seperate in the house and then I use a multi and a small single when traveling.

although I think I would go seperate just so you can keep them apart if necessary at times.
