Crates blehhh :/

I am a professional violinist/vioist, performing and teaching for a living. It is one of the reasons I got Fox: because I'm rarely away for more than 2-3 hours.

For the past two nights and days, I have let Fox first sleep in his living room bed instead of in his crate, and last night was the first night he slept the whole night in bed with me. He ended up snuggling at the head of the bed with me.

So today and tomorrow, we have two morning concerts and then a three hour rehearsal this evening until 10. I thought I'd have a chance to go home to let him out to stretch his legs, but I'm stuck here until 1, meaning he will have been in his crate from 8:15-1:30. I feel horrible! Have any of you had to ever keep your pup crated that long?
 
He'll be fine. Spitfire gets grumpy at flyball tournaments and goes in his crate with his back to the door (I dont' see you you don't exist naa!) I have to pull him out once in a while as generally he wants to stay in. Also Fox is old enough 5 hours is not to long for a potty break.

You might get some Sheltie stink eye but that is because he is spoiled not that you were mean LOL
 
My 2 year old has been crated from 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM 3 days a week since he was 6 months old. He's fine during the day. Quite honestly, when we aren't home, and even when I AM home, they sleep the day away. My 2 year old's crate is plenty big enough for him to stand up, lay down, spin around in (he will spin in fast circles in it when I come home), and sit down. He runs willingly to it every time we have to go out.

Long story short version ... He'll be fine.

I just got home and he was fine. Actually quite glad to see me. So now, some well deserved quality time!
 
Think he'll be fine if he's over 6 months. I'd be a little worried if he were much younger. It is important to make a puppy get used to the crate even when you are around the house so that it knows it's a good place to chill when you are out or working on something. I think it'll go well.

I would be in your camp but for instance a flyball tournament it is not possible for them to run free. And Spitfire hates it so much that when I was still trying to get him to run he escaped the ring and ran into his crate LOL. At home they are free roamers but then I have a nice fenced yard for the guys to play in.

Personally, I have never understood what can get people to believe it is okay to keep a dog trapped in there home !!!!- it is so far from their nature.
It is quite ok by workouts and similar. staying in a short time and under surveillance.

Why should this be prohibited in Sweden - if it was good for the puppy / dog????.

The answer is straight and clear:
No, it should not, not even for two minutes, then you break the law.

After you got home your puppy is eight weeks filled and counted under the Act as a "dog". Then:
- It is forbidden to keep the dog in a cage indoors - if the cage door is not removed completely. Having the cage door open is not enough.

- It is forbidden to keep the dog in a "playpen" by four grid of compost or similar - that there is no ceiling on the "cage" does not matter.

Many dogs appreciate their own space, an indoor kennel, but then the dog should be able to choose whether it wants to be there or not"

Is every law a good idea there? For there are bad ones here.

That said when Sca was a puppy he slept in his crate and when the go to Mom and Dad's they still do. After a hard day of running the fence and going crazy there they will actually come in the house and immediately go in their houses (Sca doesn't like Spitfire in his so they each have one). They have clean pads in them and Sca even has a cool pad for flyball. Certainly someone that has a dog 'live' in one should not have a dog. But it seems to me we have no control and maybe y'all have a bit to much. But that is just my opinion and until I become emperor of the world it doesn't matter much :)
 
Fox is doing quite well when I let him have the run of my place for periods under an hour when I run errands. He does not mind his crate, and gets in for naps voluntarily at times. When he is ready (soon I think, he can have complete freedom in the house while I am gone. I am not so worried about him tearing up anything as I am about him getting hurt. Better safe than sorry. Using common sense and have a sense of empathy is the best policy in my opinion when it comes to crates.
