Crytororchidism puppy

Took our little man to get neutered on Thursday and come to find out one of his testicles was undescended and cryptorchid? The vet said that it was wedged in his abdomen and basically they had to go looking for it. He has an incision along the side of his weiner and then another one in front of it up his belly where they finally found it. He has a pain killer script and some antibiotics but I feel so bad for him. He wants to run and play with our yellow lab so he has been crated a lot just to force him to rest. I can tell he's sore and his belly is puffy. I'm so distraught about this, it was supposed to be simple!! :(

Anyone else have experience with this in their pups? What can I expect for recovery time and how long for the swelling to go down?? Poor little guy, I can't stand to see him like this...
 
Shelties are one of those breeds prone to crypto so it happens pretty often. There's a thread at the moment from someone who just had their crypto pup done, and if you so a search you'll find a lot of threads.

I had a similar experience with my male - it took a lot of hunting for the vet to find them. However my vet sent him home with no pain relief so the poor boy was in agony (I ended up going back to get some). It took him longer to recover than my female but once on the pain relief things went okay.

Riley and I are wishing your guy a speedy recovery! Does your guy spend much time having to wear the cone?

Riley is cryptorchid as well. I haven't had him neutered yet, but I will in probably Feb. He is an active puppy so I imagine he will have to be crated a lot or in a ex pen after.
 
His name is Ranger, he's a pretty little shaded sable pup. He wasn't given a cone or pain pills by the vet. He hasn't been chewing himself really, but I can tell he wants to. I went back the next day to get his pain pills also. It makes me and the big lab really sad that he's crated! I'm so sad about this, it kills me that he is hurting, I'm just all knotted up.
 
im curious to why you vet didnt mention this to you before the surgery so you would be better prepared for what the surgery was going to be..with that said alot of shelties are cryto. Its not uncommon unfortunately.
 
My Bacca was crypto, and even though his brothers and sisters all went champion, this is why I got him as a companion pet.

It bothers me a lot that your breeder released this pup to you unknowing about the condition. Any reputable breeder would recognize this. I would question your breeder about this.

That being said, the surgery is similar to a spay for a female. It does require instrusive surgery

As for his recovery...he was leaping again in less a day/.
 
I hope your breeder had the integrity to pay for the additional surgical costs incurred. I had a couple of monorchids over the years and paid any cost above that of a standard neuter.
 
My baby Emmett just went through his crypto surgery, he was sent home with two kinds of pain meds, some antibiotics, and the cone of shame he had to wear for a week.

Since I have an 18 month old sheltie also, I either kept Emmett crated or cuddled on the bed next to me watching a movie. He has healed well and you can hardly see the scare and it has been barely a month.

On a slightly unrelated topic, after his surgery, Emmett stopped smelling of wet socks! My other sheltie has never stunk like dog but Emmett reeked of smelly wet socks, I would bathe him once a week but then he smelled the strawberry wet socks. Since his surgery, he smells like puppy and I don't have to hold my breath with kissing on him.

Unfortunately I wasn't very knowledgable about how breeders can be when we got the sheltie. I think we got him from a BYB, we got lucky but I don't think that the woman would have the slightest care that we had to pay more. Thankfully he is very healthy otherwise.

About a week post surgery (Christmas Day actually), Ranger seemed pretty much 100% better and today he was even well enough that we took a trip to PetSmart to meet some new people and pups again. He's back playing and acting like a maniac so I'm super relieved. Thanks for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers!
