Dakota and I survived a pitbull attack - heartbreaking story.

Yesterday a gal I see on our walks at times, got attacked by a pit bull, she was limping home. He went after her husky who is this gentle sweet natured dog. She told me he was loose and to be careful. She said the one day she didn't have her mace spray. I walked my girls armed. Kaleigh got attacked here in a neighborhood and the dog, a boxer type, overpowered the owner, bit her kid to get to us. The kid had to be taken to the ER, and I did hear that the same dog was put down. It got on the nearby school yard and bit another kid. Ever since then I never leave the house without being properly prepared, and I will not show ANY mercy to any dog that goes after my dog and tries to harm it.

Pit bulls are triggered by shelties, and I get very nervous because there are many around us. I can only offer my sincere sympathies for what happened. It is tragic. Don't allow fear to rob your joy, just arm yourself and know how to be protective of yourself and Deska. Be grateful y'all are ok. Working in insurance I can tell you, many that have a run in with a pit-they don't fare as well.

If you haven't already, let the authorities know, give them as much info as possible, because if a pit does this once, it ONLY escalates, that is the cycle and the next incident probably will be WORSE for someone else.

I couldn't agree more - pitbulls are really dangerous and unpredictable because of their high prey drive and instinct to kill. They have something seriously wrong with them psychologically.. Unfortunately there are a lot of pitbulls in the province we live in (Nova Scotia, Canada) because the surrounding cities/provinces have banned pitbulls, and a lot of the ones living there have arrived at shelters where we live and have been re-homed in our city.

What insurance companies found is that they get put into shelters then adopted out sometimes after an incident, sometimes shipped to another state to avoid detection, without disclosure, so the behaviors re-occur and that is why they are high risk. They become part of the problem because an unsuspecting family doesn't know the history, and something triggers them again and again they have an incident. People get FURIOUS because they are branded a high risk animal, but what they FAIL to understand is the payouts after one incident. It isn't just one insurance company that has files, most of them can produce mounds of claims where a pit bull did significant EXPENSIVE damage. It isn't if, it becomes when for most liability situations.

True story, I had a young couple who lived next to me have one before I ever worked in insurance. She came home from a costume party and the dog didn't recognize her and went berserk and attacked her thinking she was an intruder coming into the home. He wouldn't let go of her. Her spouse couldn't get her to let go either and so he had to shoot it. Gruesome injuries. They never dreamed the dog would react and attack them. Raised from a puppy, never had any scary history. But instinct kicks in and they will not relent.

I reported it to the police and animal control on the day of the attack.
This situation got messy because the people that were walking the pitbull were NOT the owners of it. They were 'friends' with the owner, and were told by her to never let it off leash. However, I am pretty sure these people were intoxicated because they were extremely slow to react to what happened, and they did not show any concern for us. They didn't even apologize or give me their names/number. We only found out who they were because my dad and uncle drove out to the area when I called them and told them what happened and they searched the neighborhood and asked everyone if they know who they are. They got fined with having an off leash dog in an on leash area, and negligence causing harm. The owner got multiple fines - for having an unregistered dog, and then paying for a registration of a 'dangerous dog'. The final conclusion of the investigation was a permanent muzzle order whenever the dog is not in the house. They are also required to have a secure enclosure outside their house. Thankfully the owner was actually really cooperative with us and payed us for the vet bills two days after the attack.

They are LIABLE, you could SUE the owner easily and win-at least in the States, being in Canada not sure how stuff settles out there. Cheers to Dad & Uncle for tracking down the info. What comes to mind is why it was unregistered-that happens a lot with this breed.
 
I am sorry that this happened. I am glad that both you and your dog are okay. My dog was attacked by our neighbor's pitbull in Feb. His attack was not nearly as bad as yours. He only had a bruise on his side. The owners had a 9 year old girl leave a Rottweiler and Pitbull off leash. Their dog was quarantined for 11 days due the attack. The day after the quarantine was lifted, the dog attacked another neighbors dog. They were fined $800. I too am uneasy with this breed since he was attacked. Both my dog and my neighbor's dog attacks were unprovoked. We have since moved but being in a new neighborhood, I don't know who has dogs or where the dogs live and I worry about walking him. I hope that you and your dog can go on walks again without being afraid.
 
Thank goodness the owner took responsibility and paid for your vet bills! If not for your family's intervention it might not have happened! Good for them!!!

As far as the shepherd goes, the family moved shortly after the attack! My sister has been frightened of dogs ever since it happened! Funny thing is, I was looking for a collie when I bought my house since I had a fenced yard... she talked me into getting a Sheltie as they were smaller. I have never wanted another breed! I am totally smitten!

The kind and soft gentle hearts they have makes them so endearing to us!

I never understood the bully breeds and quite frankly hearing stories like yours makes me dislike them even more!

Oh my gosh, I am sorry to hear that! :'( it is so sad how common these pitbull attacks are. I am glad you and your dog are okay too. Yes I am extremely uneasy with pitbulls now, even though I was before we got attacked... even our neighbors pitbull puppy who is extremely friendly and sweet, I am scared of her now. I have met her several times and randomly she growled at me when I did nothing to her, which freaked me out.

I couldn't agree more! I absolutely love shelties for that same reason, they are so gentle and loving.

I really can't stand any of the bully breeds, and the people that own them just make me sick. I know that not all of them are bad but it's in their nature to attack. There should really be some restrictions or rules to owning them, like you HAVE to register them, take a course to be educated about them and write a test, or have a permit or something. It should be the same as owning a gun.
