Dandruff behind the Ears

Ok I'm not sure if this belonged more here or in grooming. I guess it depends on if its a dry skin problem or a medical problem and I'm not sure which it is.

Anyways we have officially given up on gluing or taping the ears. Roscoe just plays too hard with our other two dogs. When I finally do get his ears to stay they don't stay long and really I think he looks good either way so I'm gonna let them be lol. Well I noticed some white stuff behind his ears a couple days ago and assumed it was still some glue left over from my attenpts to glue them last week before I gave up. Well I started looking and realized no... Its dandruff. So I parted his hair behind his ears and was shocked at all the dandruff he has. I mean I see the flakes on his skin getting ready to flake off. Its bad.

I did a google search but didn't come up with much. A few things about mites that could cause it. I did a search on here too and found nothing. So I'm hoping someone on here can help me out. I will take him to the vet if I need to. I have no problem with that.

Now I did soak his ears in detachol a week ago to get the glue job gone wrong off. Maybe this started it? I'm not sure... He doesn't seem bothered by it but it can't be comfortaable... It doesn't look comfortable at least.

So any suggestions? It starts right behind his ears and goes up most of the ear. That's the only spot I have seen any dandruff.

He is 4 months and one week old. We have had him for about 5 weeks now.
 
Excessive dander can be due to a few things - allergy, dry skin or not getting enough air, as well as mites and bitey things. But it is pretty common in puppies as they often dont produce enough oils at that age to keep their skin hydrated. Plus it sounds like you could have dried out the skin further.

Try putting some baby oil on the area to rehydrate it, or purchase some doggy moisturiser to rub in (I know there is some available with sunscreen in it - dogs have different pH to us so not sure that human moisturiser would help). There are also medicated shampoos that help manage dander. And i would suggest adding some extra essential oils (eg fish oils) to his diet to help his own body combat it.
 
I have the same problem with Cali if I don't keep the fine wavey hair behind her ears powdered up. Once that part gets greasy, I also notice dandruff in the same area. I try to keep baby powder on the area to suck the oils out atleast 1-2 times a week. The fur is soo fine that it mats extremely easy too if I don't keep up with it.
 
Cornstarch works well behind the ears too. I used it on Emma over two weeks ago to keep the snarls out and she has been fine. I haven't noticed any dandruff there.

Yup I forgot about that. She looks a little silly and leaves white marks on the furniture after doing it, but it is a HUGE help in keeping the mats out of that section of fur. It is so fine and wavey on Cali that it literally will tangle back up right after brushing if she shakes her head.
