Denture Bones....don't touch them

The only other thing I've tried is your basic rawhide bones and Dingo denta-bones (rawhide mixed with a little chicken flavour strips). Those don't seem to affect their tummies. But now sure what they are doing for their teeth.

Has anyone tried bully sticks? they smell gross but my dogs love them. does anyone have any feedback on them?

thanks!

Bully sticks are great for them because they're a natural treat. You're right though, they DO smell gross!! They're also pretty expensive here. My guys all love the Dingo bones too. Another one they like is the Toro braids although I'm always concerned because if you read the package all of them are made in China where the problem food/treats came from a few years ago.

Spencer also loves bully sticks but he will finish off one in a day. At the price I pay for them, I have to admit that I take the bully stick away from him long before he has a chance to chew it way down so he can have it again on another day.

Suky hates them

Because I do my dog's teeth cleaning once a week, I was desperate to find something to help with the plaque on the back teeth. Suky won't touch the mint flavored anything, and hates the greenies. My Aussie ate them in two bites and then had the runs, so I said no more! I agree the price is ridiculous. I am sticking with regular milk bones, one medium a day, and do teeth brushing nightly, with scraping and flossing as needed on the weekends. Suky has pearly whites, even in the back. Good luck!

I buy large roasted beef bones from the pet shop, they are 75p and usually last Cadbury quite a while. Some people don't like them because they fear that a dog will break a bit off and get a blockage, but I buy the big knucklebones and I monitor Cadbury and they are too thick for him to break into pieces to swallow.

Pigs ears are also a good one.

Have you ever seen Dried Bull Twizzles? When I first saw them in the shop I thought no, they can't really be... Goes to prove you CAN use every part of the animal:wink2:

.

Pigs ears are also a good one.

Will the pig's ears actually work on tartar, etc., or are they really just a very good chew (e.g. for a bored dog?) Terrific if it accomplishes both objectives! (do you buy the smoked? I'm always afraid of "flavoured" anything because of the "runny stool" factor)

Still looking for the right chew to help my boys teeth clean. (Nope - teeth brushing just isn't going to happen. I'm in enough trouble with my own dentist for not flossing my OWN teeth often enough! :rolleyes2:)

I buy them individually at the pet shop and they are just dried, no fancy flavours. I see no reason why they should not help to remove plaque as the dog is chewing and they are hard. Plus I'm sure I read that chewing produces saliva which is very good for preventing plaque build up?

Cadbury puts his pig's ear right at the back of his mouth and is chewing for ages, and he is a big dog, so it would take a sheltie even longer. The only thing I notice is they can be a little salty, so I always leave plenty of fresh water down. If I so much as show him a pig's ear he starts to drool all over the floor!

I'm like you Barb. I can pick up poo, vomit, wipe up pee, clean ears and gunky eyes - but teeth? No way! Just can't do teeth!

I have found two things that really help Lexi keep clean teeth. The first is a large beef bone, particularly a knuckle bone as posted before. They are tough and nearly indestructible. Lexi has had hers for a year and a half and it still looks like she has barely touched it. She gnaws on it all the time. However, I do make sure she only has it while I am at home, to make sure nothing breaks off. As far as I can tell she actually doesn't "eat" the bone, but over time her saliva probably breaks it down. I'm guessing that is how it works since she's never been able to even break a piece off. The other item I love to give Lexi is "Gentle-Dental Twists" (They are made by DentaClean, if that helps). They are similar to a rawhide twist, but much easier to digest. Because they have no flavor listed, I sniffed one the first time I gave one to her and to me it smells sort of sweet, but chicken is one of the ingredients. Anyway, Lexi usually finishes one of these off in about 10 minutes, because they are softer than a rawhide, and I have never noticed a softer stool. Hope this helps!!
