Do Shelties recognize..............

at some level their own breed ? I know they recognize their dog family.Or is it more primal like male or female.Not sure where I'm going with this,kinda just popped in my head:razz:
 
For a long time Deska had a fascination with Rough Collies - I'm sure its because they looked like him (we have quite a few in my neighbourhood). When we go to the dog club the shelties always end up hanging with each other, and not just because their owners do. I am pretty sure they recognise their own breed, or at least they have an idea of what they look like and so what other dogs look like them.

I know they recognise other breeds because Tully is still a bit phobic about certain breeds - black labs because my neighbours black lab always squashes her and cattle dogs in general since she was attacked by one. She has quite a few goldie friends so I guess she feels safe with them.

But when we go to confirmation shows and Tully meets her siblings she doesnt reconise them as being siblings. We even did training with Tully's sister from a previous litter and I dont think she could tell.
 
Oh absolutely they do! Mine go crazy when another sheltie comes around and they do not get like that with any other breed. My last sheltie did the same thing - in fact, he really did not like any other breeds to play with other than shelties!
 
Ooh, I am excited to test this out. A family down the street from us just got a Sheltie puppy and we need to set up a puppy play date (after Buffy gets 1 week away from her spay surgery).

I do think Buffy recognizes herding dogs and small dogs, because she enjoys the way they play. It is similar to the way she likes to play.
 
They do recognize their own breed.

Edan is very standoffish with most dogs. With other Shelties he tends to be a bit more interested and will approach to sniff and doesn't seem as skittish about being sniffed back.
 
Oh yes they recognize their breed, all of my dogs are more friendly towards shelties. Justice notices every sheltie that goes by. I swear he is thinking do I know that dog. Justice also hates dogs with short muzzles. He was attack as a puppy by a Boston and if it snorts he dislikes it. He won't attack but he is very nervous.
 
Sca seemed to at the agility contest we snuck into. He seems to like Sables best but that would make sense since his mom and the herd there were mostly sables.
 
We find the same thing here. Our dogs are wary of dogs that are not shelties. Sometimes they can be snobs about it, where they will just look at them with disdain. And certainly toward obnoxious in your face breeds.
It does make you laugh.
 
Since we don't often encounter other Shelties, it's hard for me to judge. Phebe doesn't seem to have a breed-related phobia, but she is extra careful around dogs that tower over her.
