Does your dog have car sickness?

Mine does. He pukes. If we give him some anti nausea medicine, it's fine, but we can't always do that. If I run some errands, it seems I always get home 5 minutes too late, he vomits, and he eats it back (eeewww).

I'm tempted to leave a cage in the back of my SUV and take him with me ALL the time when I run errands. Will he get used to it? Or is it a dead end anyway?
 
Hugo I know how you feel! When my gf and I first got Grayson our 11month old Blue Merle he would get sick on car rides. When we got Grayson we knew that he had a personality that couldn't be left at home when we had to run errands.

Fortunately we realized that when he was throwing up was related to the time he was eating. We didn't even think about it! So we didn't need to give him any supplements we just had to adjust his eating schedule accordingly. He's our navigator now and no accidents anymore.

Hmm. My dog has never been carsick (apart from passing horrible gas).

The cat certainly is... I think my personal favourite moment was, while passing the border into the States...

Officer: "Anything to declare?"
Cat (very, very loudly, in the back of the van): "Hurk... hurk... yaaaaaack."
Dad: "Um... we have a cat?"

Perhaps bringing him more often would get him used to it. No guarantees.
 
Car Sick Shelties

Both of our Shelties got car sick as puppies. The first, Buddy Little, would shake, drool and drool, gag, throw up. We had had him in his crate in the back seat. We make weekly trips to the shore, and stay for a couple of days. I took Buddy's blanket, a towel, his favorite toy, and a few tiny treats with us. Buddy rode on my lap on his blanket and towel and I gave him a treat when he laid calm on my lap. It took about a month, maybe five weeks, of trips to and from the shore befoe he stopped drooling. Today he begs to ride in the car, in the back seat. Sadie came to us as a puppy when Buddy was 6 1/2 months old. She also did the drooling, gagging, throw up routine. Again we put her on my lap for our trips. Also took her about a month before she was fine, and happy to go for rides. :yes:
 
Hi, Sreeja. Car sickness means that the dog drools or vomits when he's riding in a car. It's not dangerous -- just very messy. :lol: Many dogs get car sick as puppies, but get over it as they grow older.
 
You're not alone

Presley has suffered from car sickness since she was a pup. She got sick on the way home and it has never stopped. She's 2yrs old now. I have tried in a kennel cage, in a plastic pet carrier, loose in the back seat, hooked up in the backseat, in the front seat, fasting her, Benedryl, Dramamine, Rescue Remedy, Ginger, feeding her in the car, taking her with Dreamer (who loves to ride), short sit sessions in the car, etc. It's not just this car either. She did it in my old car and she does it in our Explorer. NOTHING has worked with her at this point. The minute she gets into the car (even without it running), she instantly stiffens up, starts shaking, and then the drool comes. She ends up looking like Hooch (from Turner & Hooch) with that "shoe-lace drool", and then she does vomit. It's awful. I definitely can relate to what you're going through and I do wish you the best of luck. Hopefully, you're boy will get over it, and not be like our girl.
 
Car sickness

My dog had car sickness as a puppy. We took her to puppy school and it was 45 mins from my house and every time....she would throw up in the car. I talked to the vet who suggested instead of a tranquilizer to give her anti nausea medicine, which did work and it didn't make her groggy. She is going to be 4 she still get excited going in the car but doesn't need any medicine to keep from throwing up. Talk to your vet & good luck
 
My first Sheltie Marcus got car sick as a puppy. It took but about a year before he stopped getting sick in the car. He never really warmed up to car rides.

My female sheltie absolutely loved car rides. All I had to do was pick up the keyes and she'd be by the door ready to go. On the rare occasion that she would get loose, I would simply go out to the car open the door and she would run to the car and jump in.
