Does your sheltie talk?

When he was a pup, Cadfael seemed convinced that he would, one day, be able to talk like us. When we talked to him, he would look up at us, his little mouth opening and closing as he exhaled slowly. He eventually gave up.

If he is excited and impatient to go for his walkies, he becomes very vocal: barks, grunts, growls, moans, whines--a veritable orchestra!

Well Smokie will tell you stories, RRRRRRRRR of just how bad he has been treated not being fed on time, or let our when HE wants to go out.

It is quite comical to watch. Our daughter in law always asks Smokie to tell her a story. Which he almost always does.

We have lots of body lanuage, verbal language, and they know how to spell O U T. They spin, beat me up with paws, and then bark commands, out, play, give me scritches, and so on.

This is just so funny,because yesterday Trapp would talk back to me RRRRRRR,and his little mouth would open & close as if to really be telling something.

A couple of times I did the AH AH to stop him from doing something..and he would come right over in front of me and start the RRRRR thing again!

He whines, he cries, he grunts, and he grumbles. If he wants something the talking is typically accompanied by a paw swat or a nose poke. The grumbling is worst when he gets frustrated with me -- I took him to Rally class one night when I was sick and kind of spaced out, so my timing on cues was way off. He spent the entire 17 station course mumbling and grumbling at me. Our teacher couldn't stop laughing

hahah ... thats hilarious! ... My little Iris whines when were on our way outside, or when I get her to sit at the top of a flight of stairs to wait for me, she whines until I get there and then zooms up the 2nd flight...Any other time its this " rarr arr arr raa " kind of sound its quite comincal.

its funny my little one Mia will talk but not only making the sounds but than she will resort to moving her mouth with no sounds clicking her teeth. its hysterical to watch! now however she also has taught Noah how to do this trait its hysterical to watch him do it too...

Is there any particular thing that prompts her to click her teeth? Because it sounds like she's grinding, which is something they typically do when they're anxious/stressed.

I see you are a first time poster! Have you been lurking for awhile??? I'm glad that you finally joined in! Of course, your user name, got my attention! Are you a vet? If so, I hope you enjoy the forum and stay close.

We often get silly here, but we deal day-to-day with real-time serious issues with our pups. Many of us have to watch our pennies, and as much as we want to, cannot afford to run the the vet, everytime the pup seems "off" so we rely on each other here to help cue us.

Now as to clicking of teeth! Bacca does it when he's excited and jumping around. I think he clicks instead of nipping me.

Indy pants all the time. He's my anxious boy. He'll jump up on my lap and open and close his mouth with abit of "whoop" and a "click". Usually it means, he wants me to play with him or to get Bacca to leave him alone.

Our first Sheltie would grunt when you petted her. She specifically liked a full body massage. She also liked little girls with long hair. She would put her nose in their hair and do the grunting sounds.

The second one would howl when you came home after being gone for some time. So being a Sheltie nut we would sit and howl together.

The current one does like Lightplum's Mia and clicks her mouth open and shut. Especially when you scratch her face. It's like, boy that feels so-o good. She also will run to you growling when she wants your attention and wants you to come see.

I was having a discusion with my friend the other day about talking shelties.

I'm not talking about barking but kind of a grunting uh,uh throaty sound when they are being petted or getting attension. Between the 2 of us we have 5 shelties and 3 of them do it(Justice,Diva and her dog Pike) Ember and her dog Grizz don't. All the dogs are related except Grizz. Pike is the uncle of Justice, great uncle to Ember and Diva. Interestly Ember and Grizz are bi blue.

So we were wondering if this a sheltie triat or a family trait or maybe related to color?

Well I thought I had the only Sheltie that talked I have had 4 Shelties and Brea is the first to do this. It is pretty funny he does it when you pet him especially his tummy he groans and moans. He is a character just one of his funny ways
