Dog Advertising!

Being in the "biz", I've noticed that the majority of dog advertising that I see....whether its for grooming product, pet food, pet supply, store signage, pet food bags, etc. you will invariably find a Sheltie as the poster dog. (I'm only reminded because I'm about to buy some grooming software for my groomer, and sure enough....on their banner page, is a SHELTIE!)

Even my own store, that I bought AFTER it was finished, has a huge wall display of a Sheltie.

And no....not Collies....Shelties!

Not shi-tsus, not, bichons, not westies, not golden retreivers or labs, not yorkies, not any other designer breed you can name. Yes, Shelties!

Which is a surprise, since we still have difficulty getting the breed recognized and understood1? But apparentely, advertisers love the breed!

Thought I would just pass this on.

I believe Dr. Shelli (Justicemom) posted awhile back that sometimes she recognized some of the shelties on dog food products. How cool is that!

We at Sheltie Nation know why that is! They are the most beautiful breed with such stunning coats and colors, and are the best ambassadors for any K-9 community. :smile2:

I second your comments!

I really feel that many people are put off by the breed due to grooming requirements! However, it remains bonding time for me and my boys!

I've noticed that too, so many ads feature Shelties. Well, it makes perfect sense as they're so attractive and friendly looking. I know mine could sell me ice cubes in the middle of winter

Small, cute and expressive, easy to handle in front of a camera?

I've noticed it here, too. I think it might have a little to do with their use as well, since they are a pretty good "in-between" choice between pet and working dog. The other breeds I see repeated (particularly on products aimed specifically at the norwegian market) are border collies (THE shepherd) and hunters such as setters. Add a shelp, and you've covered the pet market as well, without alienating the sporters. Some brands here also choose a sheltie as a mascot, often an agility nationals winner.

:yuckyuck

That got a belly laugh out of me!!

I can relate... Feel the same for sure!

Some of you newer members won't know about this. About 10 years ago, I got a call from my vet's office saying Ralph Lauren was looking for - you guessed it - two Sheltie models for a photo shoot. I thought they were pulling my leg at first (they are jokesters at that office!!) but it was for real.

Long story short, Asta and Ally were in a Ralph Lauren Black Label catalog. We shot over two days, and what an experience it was. So interesting to get a behind the scenes look.

So Ally ended up on the cover of the catalog, with a long-legged Brazilian model lounging on a chaise with her. :biggrin2:

The stuff they asked for though - sheesh! Could the dogs dance around the models on their hind legs? Uh, no. I had to get the male model to carry treats in his pocket just so they'd go near him - STRANGER DANGER, after all they are SHELTIES.

Anyway it was a hoot. I do often comment to my husband how often Shelties are used to advertise pet stuff.

That's really awesome, Sharon! How cool!

There's a local used car dealer that uses shelties in their commercials and they have been for as long as I can remember! It's fun to see them on billboards, lol.

Its justs seems odd to me that the advertisers know and love our breed, but lay people don't even know the breed. So would advertisers expose a mostly unknown bread....

So still tryng to connect the dots......
