Dog braces?

Has anyone else had to put dental braces on their pups?

Pascal's upper canine teeth are coming in in front of the lower canine teeth and has to have an appliance put on his teeth to bring them down so they will come in right.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what I am in for besides a huge bill! I am currious as to how well the appliances stayed on and what if any troubles you've had.

Yes, for lance canines and it was a disaster. The back molars pulled partially out instead of the canines coming back. So, be very careful. I went to another canine dentist and he did a crown shortening and my boy has been very happy with that.

Never done it, never would.

Luke's top canines were doing that, but instead of getting stuff done to him, we put pressure on them, (with our fingers) more than a dozen times a day, pushing them towards where we wanted them.

And it worked.

Here's an update

We had the procedure done and what an ordeal! The bands keep coming off whenever he finds something to chew on like one of our socks or branch in the yard that has fallen from the trees.

We've had to take all his toys away from him and no more chew bones or hard biscut type bones either. Poor pup is miserable we are trying our best to keep him occupied ie chewing on us! Long walks, good for everyone that is a plus.

Oh and I've taken to brushing his teeth and rinsing his mouth twice a day! A routine I hope we stay on for his health. After spending all this money I sure don't want him to get gum disease, ugg!

Just when I think I've heard just about everything....dog braces! Really???!!!

I like Narmowen's story. When I was a kid, my eye tooth didn't have enough room to come down so it was growing in WAY above my gumline (definite vampire look)! Well, my parent's had 4 kids - no way were braces an option.

So the dentist had me take the back of spoon and push the tooth beside my eye tooth outwards 50 times per day. It's not perfect, but it worked!

Ugg, well maybe if hubby and I were home more but darn we have to work to buy those braces.....yeah I did something similar when a kid to keep my two front teeth from overlapping push one forward the other one backward, it worked but took months.

From what the Vets told us Pascal's mouth would be deformed with his lower canines protruding outward and sticking out his lips and he would not be able to eat or bite properly which would affect his overall health. Plus the upper ones would not be in the right place and there would be a space which would be a perfect place for gum desease to form.

Hey we would do it for our children why not our precious pup? I am just hoping it works those darn bands keep coming off at least 4 times today I had to put them back on, lol.

hmmm...this is interesting. One of our babies has a snaggletooth. Bottom canine is jutting out pretty bad. No pain or discomfort for him and he eats and chews ok, but ohhh he would be the perfect showdog had he not had that tooth

I hope the braces work for your boy. The dentist that had to fix my boy after the first dentist screwed up the braces said that the bands were too tight and the first dentist should have been monitoring that more closely. So, if you can get your dentist to check on him often, it should work. Good luck!
