My son who is in 4-H with Shelly was told about 3 weeks ago alot of the questions on the quizs for the state shows that the 4-H kids have to take before a show were going to be on Dog First Aid this year. So I had to purchase this book because I really don't know that much about First Aid for Dogs. Just thought this book might be on interest to some of you. It's called Dog First Aid ....Be Red Cross Ready..... Safety Series Vol. 2, the book is put out by the American Red Cross and it includes a DVD. It's a great Book! I didn't :no:know how to or where to check for a pulse or even what a normal heart and pulse were. What about what's a normal temp and how to take one. How about doing CPR on a dog. Poisoning...shock...Hot spots .....insect bits ... kennel cough plus so much more. The book also tells you what you should have in a Pet First Aid Kit. I have a first aid kit in my car for my son but not one for Shelly. Shelly is going to have one now! I hope I never have to use it but it will be there! Of course you need to get to a vet right away for any emergencies but this book can really help you out til you get to a vet. It also tells you what the signs and symptoms...the most common causes.....what you can do to help. I never knew the American Red Cross put out a Pet First Aid Book. :wink2:

Wow! What a great thing to have the kids learn. Since you have posted the name of the book, I think I will invest in getting one. Thanks for telling us about it!

Way back when I was in in the Boy Scouts, one of the merit badges I earned was "First Aid to Animals." All of the merit badges have a booklet to help the Scout earn the badge, I remember it being pretty informative. They should be available to the general public as well.

Edit: this merit badge has undergone some revisions since I took it. Today it's called "Veterinary Medicine" and appears to be more of an overall knowledge badge about the field. The merit badge that seems most applicable to members of this forum would be "Dog Care" http://www.usscouts.org/usscouts/mb/mb041.asp

First Aid Book

That first aid book sounds great. I have a Sheltie website as well and I am sure some of that info would be useful in offering advice and writing articles. Thanks for the tip. :wink2:
