Dog food analysis spreadsheet

I, like many of you, am entirely too picky about the food that my dogs get.

So, being the nerd that I am, I made a spreadsheet (currently at 34 foods).

I know that there are many factors that go into choosing a dog food, but I chose to compare the following: Protein %, # of the first five ingredients that are meat, kCal/Cup, # of flavors that can be rotated (same brand), and whether or not it's grain free.

I can share it as a Google doc if anyone wants, or I can email it to people (just PM me your email address). It might be best for me to email it because it's easier to manipulate in Excel. (For instance, I've put red marks next to brands that don't fit my criteria in each category).

Just let me know if you'd like it--I'm happy to share.

I did the very same thing when we were trying to decide what to feed ours. It is an excellent way to make the comparisons.

I've got some ideas has to other columns to add too, but this is terrific. I think it should be posted as a sticky! How many times have we discussed protein "this" and fat content "that".

This is an objective listing of "facts". I wish we could add to this on the forum!

Okay, I have sent out a copy to all who have requested it up to this point (10:20 EST 6/27). If you've requested it and haven't received it, let me know and I'll try again.

Barb, I agree. This started out as just a comparison of a couple foods and it sort of got out of hand! If I had started out intending to share with everyone, I would have definitely gotten a bit more detailed. But now I'm too lazy to go back and look up all those foods again!

But, since I don't have a job and am always looking for something to do...what columns would you add?

Where did you get the pricing from? I thought I was only paying $2 a lb for the Orijen...I'll have to recheck that lol.

Well, that part is pretty unscientific. I just went to amazon.com and found the size closest to 5 lb and used that one. But, there are so many vendors out there that the number varies quite a bit. But, to give you specifics, I used Orijen Adult, which the 5lb is now $16.99, which is $3.40/lb. When I made the spreadsheet, it was more expensive.

And keep in mind that it's cheaper if you buy it in larger quantities, I just wanted to try to compare apples to apples.
